Students used their binders to analyze historical documents, highlight key evidence, and organize their thinking before writing their responses. Having everything in one place helped students feel more confident when discussing the topic and participating in class.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the binders, many of them were excited to have a dedicated place to keep all of their work. Several students commented that it made them feel more organized and \"like real historians.\" For many of my students, especially those who benefit from structure and visual supports, the binders make learning feel more manageable. They enjoy adding new pages, using tabs, and building a resource they can look back on when reviewing for quizzes or the state test.\r\n\r\nThanks to our donors, students now have a system that helps them stay organized and engaged with the content. The next steps in our classroom involve continuing to build these binders as we move into new units on the Constitution and the early United States. Students will use their binders to practice document-based questions, complete writing outlines, and review key concepts that will help them succeed on the American History state test. During independent work time and small group activities, students are able to quietly use items like fidget tools or sensory supports at their desks while completing assignments in their interactive binders or working on class projects. One memorable moment occurred during a writing activity when a student who often struggles to stay focused was able to use a sensory item and remain engaged long enough to complete their entire response. It was exciting to see them feel proud of finishing their work independently.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were incredibly excited and curious. We took time to talk about how the sensory tools are meant to help support focus and learning, and the students quickly understood how they could use them responsibly. Many of them were eager to try different items and find what works best for them. It was wonderful to see students who sometimes feel overwhelmed become calmer and more ready to participate in class activities.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these sensory supports will continue to play an important role as we work on upcoming lessons and projects. As we move into new units that require reading, writing, and collaborative discussions, students will be able to use these tools to help manage their focus and emotions. Track and Field has been one of my favorite sports since high school. It taught me a lot, not just about my teammates and myself, but rather how to push myself, to motivate others, and to work individually harder to strengthen the team.\r\n\tThe purpose of this project was to obtain tools that would invite students to try something new. This year, many school districts were put in a tough space when President Trump wanted to restrict DEI. Our district superintendent made the decision not to sign that document, which meant that part of the budget would be diminished; cuts were made across the board, and that meant even for athletics.\r\n\tThis year, I stepped out of my comfort zone to coach. In the winter, I assisted both boys' and girls' junior high school basketball. This was very demanding; 4 days a week practices and several games each week from November through February. Then I decided to have a go with Track and Field in the spring. I knew going in that I would like to be able to give as many students a way to express themselves. When asking students around the building what they thought track and field was, many would roll their eyes and say something about running...which honestly really made me grind my teeth. I asked many to come out and try the sport because it wasn't all running laps around the building, or sprints in the gym; there are opportunities to jump over hurdles and bars and into sandpits, and even throw shotputs, discuses, and even a javelin (foam of course). All of these events test your physical strength and agility, but also your mental strength; how one motivates themselves and continues to push through, even at the toughest time.\r\n\tI had a few students show up and try for the first couple weeks of the season; unfortunately, due to lack of registration our season ended rather abruptly. But on the positive side those students did try out the new items - shotput, discus, javelin, and starting blocks; and they loved getting to learn how to use them. And for these materials, I am again, very grateful. \r\n\tThese few students hopefully learned a new skill physically, but also ventured out of their own comfort zones to attempt a new activity on their own, for which you made possible. I hope to encourage more students to try track and field again in the future, because I know what an impact it had on me growing up.
