Having individual copies allows students to fully engage with the novel as we read, discuss, annotate, and explore its complex ideas together. Scythe introduces students to important literary skills such as analyzing character development, conflict, symbolism, setting, and theme. As we read, students will also examine how the author develops a fictional world while using that world to explore universal ideas about power, morality, justice, and what it means to be human.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active experience. Students read independently and together, stopping to annotate important passages and record their thoughts on sticky notes. We discuss the novel, share different interpretations, and use evidence from the text to support our ideas. Having their own copies means students can return to important moments in the story, track the development of themes and symbols, and become more confident readers and thinkers.\r\n\r\nI am especially excited to see students who enjoy challenging books become deeply invested in Scythe. Many gifted students love the opportunity to explore difficult questions and debate ideas that do not always have simple answers. This novel gives them exactly that opportunity. They ha d a lot of fun experimenting with the colors and the process before creating their edition. \r\nTo deepen the experience, students exchanged prints so that each student left with a complete class collection of Florida wildlife artwork. This turned the project into both an art lesson and a shared learning experience about conservation. They even made an edition for you as well! \r\nNext, students will reflect on their work, connect their prints to environmental studies, and explore how artists use printmaking to raise awareness.
