The snacks arrived quickly and on time before the state testing began. The 3 day CELDT, tested English Learners in listening, writing, and reading. Each morning I passed out one of the food items for the students to eat before or during the test. Students enjoyed the Zbar Iced Oatmeal Cookie on day one. On day two students tried the Nutri-Grain Soft Baked breakfast bar, strawberry flavor. On the last day of the Celdt, students consumed Pop-Tarts.\r\n The students then had to take over two weeks the California State CAT tests in Math, Language, a two day Writing, plus one Math Task test. I had enough food to pass out each morning for the students during all of these tests.\r\n Most students loved the GoGo Squeeze Applesauce and the fan favorite, the Oreo Cookies. Half the class remembered to eat breakfast while the other half forgot or did not have the time in the morning. Everyone benefited with the food you purchased.\r\n I had food left over after the completion of all the tests. I used the remainder of the food to give out during the annual Kickball Basketball tournament which had all 4th grade classes competing against each other. My class won on the last day of school. My greatest goal is to turn my students into lifelong readers, and, thanks to your support, that goal is becoming a reality for many of them.\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the year, many of my students found reading a struggle and lacked motivation. For this reason, I started introducing a small collection of graphic novels I had previously acquired. They soon discovered reading could be fun and couldn't get enough of these books. \r\n\r\nI then decided to post this project on Donors Choose. We made a list together with books they were interested in checking out and I posted it. To my surprise, it got funded almost right away and the kids were ecstatic. As soon as we received them, they started \"devouring\" them. \r\n\r\nFor this, I wanted to thank you again. You have truly made a difference in my students' lives. All of them have reached their yearly reading goal, and I could not be any happier.","fullyFundedDate":1744238552635,"projectUrl":"project/turning-pages-turning-minds/9189514/","projectTitle":"Turning Pages, Turning Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Menendez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1415875_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1547148599437","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrmnndz"},{"teacherId":1415875,"projectId":9082877,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation. These books are already making a big impact in my students' lives. Every year, as a fourth grade teacher, my goal is to have as many of my students fall in love with reading as possible. It has not been easy to do this lately. It is quite hard for teachers to compete with the instant gratification kids get from videogames, TV, internet, etc. these days.\r\n \r\nI always try to start exposing my students to easy short and fun books first, and once they are \"hooked\", have them transition to longer books. The \"trick\" seems to be working. As of right now, 90% of my students have reached their yearly reading goal, and the rest are very close to do the same. Your donation has helped tremendously achieve this goal.\r\n \r\nThanks for making a big difference in my students' academic lives. My girls tell me that \"the boys really like the Messi book\". Reading is one of many favorite activities for us. My students love free reading time. \r\nAdditionally, we received wonderful reading benches, with comfortable cushions and storage. I arranged the benches on both sides of a corner in the front of our classroom. This creates separation from the classroom, and desks, and has quickly become the number 1 spot for my students to hang out for reading, computer free time, coloring, and even playing inside games on rainy days. I love that I also gained additional storage for supplies.\r\nMy students and I were moved to learn that perfect strangers cared for our little school and classroom enough to donate to our project!
