Thanks to your generous support, my students were able to read Esperanza Rising and Island of the Blue Dolphins—two powerful novels that are helping them grow not just as readers, but as thinkers and individuals.\r\n\r\nThrough these books, students continued developing essential reading skills like identifying theme, analyzing character development, and making text-to-self and text-to-world connections. With Esperanza Rising, students explore themes of resilience, identity, and social justice as they follow Esperanza's journey from privilege to hardship during the Great Depression. Island of the Blue Dolphins challenges them to consider themes of survival, independence, and the strength of the human spirit through the eyes of Karana, a girl living alone on a remote island.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. We annotate texts together, ask tough questions, and hold thoughtful discussions where students reflect on the characters' choices, challenges, and growth. We also connect these texts to our own lives—talking about what it means to face change, overcome fear, and find our voice.\r\nOne student, Amaya, connected with Esperanza Rising. At the start of the year, she was hesitant to speak up in class. But as we read Esperanza's story, something clicked. Amaya began sharing her own family's immigration story, drawing parallels between her life and Esperanza's. The novel gave her a way to express herself and feel seen—she began participating regularly and encouraged others to share, too.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make moments like that possible. Your generosity puts powerful books into students' hands and brings meaningful learning into their lives. We're so grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1742940741493,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-literature-circles/9097186/","projectTitle":"Books for Literature Circles!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Murphy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9915776"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36983","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":353,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":48,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":67,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":56.2,"schoolId":36983,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about San Altos Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"San Altos Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/lemon-grove-school-district/san-altos-elementary-school/36983"}
