The self-care station you helped fund is now fully stocked with items like deodorant, hair ties, lotion, and tissues—simple tools that have had a powerful impact. From the moment students saw the station, they understood it was created with their dignity and independence in mind. One student quietly said, \"This makes me feel like someone really cares.\" That moment captured exactly what this project is all about.\r\n\r\nWe've already seen students using the station with confidence and respect, whether it's freshening up after recess or grabbing a tissue without disrupting their work. It's become a quiet but essential part of our classroom environment, supporting their physical and emotional well-being. In true Montessori fashion, students are taking ownership of the space, even helping to keep it tidy and stocked.\r\n\r\nAs we continue to nurture the whole child, this self-care station is helping students feel more comfortable, focused, and ready to engage deeply in their learning. I explained that it was a new way to help us take care of our bodies and minds when emotions run high or energy runs low. Since then, this small addition has made a big difference in how quickly my students are able to calm down and re-engage in learning. Having something cold to drink after being upset, overheated from recess, or overwhelmed in my room helps them regulate faster and get back to a calm, safe space for conversation.\r\n\r\nThe fridge has also quietly supported students who face food insecurity. A few of them visit my room two or three times a week just to check if there's fruit, yogurt, or a snack available. They know they can count on this space for a small moment of comfort and stability. What started as a simple resource for dysregulated students has become a symbol of care and community in my room.\r\n\r\nMy next step is to keep building on this idea, using the fridge to support self-regulation, healthy habits, and empathy. The older students have plenty of space to spread out and work as well. \r\n\r\nWhen the students need to work collaboratively to make a plan, draw a design, or do research, they sit around a table as a team. When they are programming the robots and testing their code, the tables get folded up and put away so they can use the floor space. I work with students ranging from first through third grade, with varying disabilities. Few of my students are nonverbal or don't like to talk a lot. One of my students who rarely speaks to peers will go to Taco's tank and talk to him regularly using complete sentences. The sentences are short, but they are complete sentences. A first-grade student whose disability is autism did a report on Taco and shared it with his Gen Ed classroom doing community circle time. The student who shared Taco was able to remember and share that bearded dragons need a warm and cool side in there take and it is important they have a large tank to live in. He shared what Tacos needs to eats and how Taco must have special lighting to keep him healthy. Taco has allowed students who normally feel out of place to feel relevant. Students have formed a connection to Taco. I have used Taco for Social Emotional Learning lessons. The kids understand when Taco puffs up his beard or if his beard is black something is bothering him. The students have recognized that it's ok to be upset but not to let things ruin your whole day and it's ok to be upset and to let people help you like we help Taco. When Taco sees his reflection in glass of tank it upset him, so we have made pictures and put on tank to break up reflections to help taco. \r\nMy third-grade students learned how to research and collect information we needed to make Taco's husbandry correct for Taco to come to school. The students did a great job researching and sharing what they learned. \r\n Needing to take responsibility for Taco has improved all my students' self-esteem. They are very proud of knowing how to check and write down the temperature and humidity level inside of Taco's tank. They weigh his food and document what days he gets to eat bugs and how many and what type of bugs. The students cut up the greens and vegetables that Taco gets daily. Taking on the responsibility of Taco also has increased students' vocabulary as well. I heard one of the second graders talking about hydration and how it's important for people too. \r\nI am very grateful to Donor Chose for allowing me to give this experience to my students.
