The devices track the movement of an object and turn that motion into graphs, such as position versus time.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching students move an object and then immediately look at the graph that was created. Instead of just looking at a graph in a textbook and trying to imagine what it means, they could actually see how moving faster, slower, stopping, or changing direction affected the graph. It made something that can feel very abstract much more real.\r\n\r\nThe students were excited and curious right away. Once they realized that their own movements could create a graph in real time, they wanted to experiment with it. They started asking questions like, \"What happens if I move faster?\" or \"What will the graph look like if I stop and then go backward?\"\r\n\r\nThat curiosity was great to see because they weren't just trying to get the \"right answer.\" They were testing ideas, making predictions, and then using the technology to see if they were correct.\r\n\r\nThe next step is for students to move beyond simply creating the graphs and start using them to explain and analyze motion. They will make predictions about what a graph should look like, test those predictions using the devices, and then use the data to explain what actually happened.\r\n\r\nMy goal is for students to be able to look at a position-versus-time graph and not just see lines on a page. I want them to be able to visualize the actual movement behind the graph and explain what the object was doing. They noticed that trash was building up in certain areas, so they researched the problem, tracked where the biggest \"hot spots\" were, and used that data to figure out where smart bins would have the most impact.\r\n\r\nWhat made this project meaningful was that students could see the results of their work right away. They were learning about data, technology, problem-solving, and teamwork, but they were also using those skills to improve their own school. The project also helped them earn their Civic Seal of Engagement because they were actively working to make their community better.\r\n\r\nI think the most exciting part for the students was seeing that something they created could actually change what was happening on campus. The smart bins gave students an incentive to pick up and properly throw away their trash, and our students were able to track whether their ideas were working.\r\n\r\nThey were proud to see the campus becoming cleaner, but they also noticed something bigger happening. The culture started to shift. Students were more aware of their surroundings and more willing to take responsibility for keeping the campus clean. That was really powerful for them to see.\r\n\r\nDifferent students connected with different parts of the project. Some really enjoyed looking at the data and figuring out where trash was collecting. Others loved designing, building, and improving the smart bins. Some students really stepped up when it came to getting other students involved and explaining why the project mattered.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts was seeing students who might not always be the first to speak up in class become really engaged because they had something they could take ownership of. The set has already been checked out by two teachers so far this year, and we've only had the books for a short time.\r\n\r\nThis book serves as a powerful warning against censorship and the dangers of a society that abandons critical thinking for superficial entertainment, and with your help more of our students are able to read this novel that has retained its relevance even decades after it was written. When extension activities run out, \"fast-finishers\" now have an avenue to explore and find a new favorite book. Thanks to the generous donors, I'm getting closer to accomplishing that goal. \r\n\r\nThe students love to choose a new bookmark when they come in with their classes to check out books. Uno and Connect 4 have been very popular games for students to play at lunch, and it's so nice seeing them interact with each other instead of staring at their phones. The origami station is just getting started, so only a couple of students have tried that out so far. Students vote for the most popular \"this or that\" when they check out a book using the poker chips. But the biggest hit so far is Gumby. I hide Gumby on the bookshelves, and students have to find him in order to win a snack. Many of our novels are older and less appealing to teenagers, and this book encourages students to engage in conversations about tough topics.\r\n\r\nThe 10th grade classes at my high school read this book last year and are planning to read it again this winter. We only had 1 class set, and teachers were having to share the 1 set and take turns reading it. Several copies also got lost. With this new set from Donors Choose, 2 teachers at a time can now borrow a class set, allowing for more classes to be able to read this book. \r\n\r\nWith budget cuts and no funds to spend on new class sets of novels, I am so grateful for the donors who helped to fund our project.
