The dystopian themes of societal control, media manipulation, and resistance have sparked meaningful conversations and introduced critical analytical skills. Students are not just reading; they are debating why the Capitol uses the Hunger Games, discussing the ethical choices of characters, and drawing powerful parallels to issues in our own world. Being able to have functional materials for this unit will better prepare students for our Holocaust unit where they learn about real life dystopia to better prevent it happening again. What once felt like a quiet, independent activity is now a lively, collaborative one, with students forming impromptu book clubs and sharing \"aha\" moments with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThe new books have been particularly transformative for a few of our most reluctant readers. For example, one student who has struggled to finish assigned texts is already halfway through the book and has even started bringing it home to read on her own. The accessible yet complex story has given many of our quieter students the confidence to speak up in class discussions, sharing insights and observations that we might not have heard otherwise.
