I was able to allow my students to access math in a different way to help them understand adding and subtracting. One of students new to us from Africa and has no english. With these boards he is able to access the math and work on number names as well as adding and subtracting. Another student has a hard time with tracking, he cannot keep track of counting on or back. With these boards he doesn't have to keep track on his fingers, he can touch the squares and see where he is. I am blown away by your generosity and the care you choose to share with my students - who are strangers to you. I literally broke out into tears when I saw that my project had been fully funded. What benevolence we have experienced at your hands. \r\n\r\nAs an interventionist, I follow specific intervention programs that have their own accompanying texts. However, the students in my groups have daily homework and are expected to read for at least 20 minutes every night. This is where your generous donations have been critical! I have had many books in my possession as a classroom teacher for many years, and when I got this position I went to thrift stores to beef up my classroom library even further. But, I have approximately 35-40 students (depending on the quarter and their needs), and if each reads 1-3 books a night they can go through a lot of books throughout the year! So your donations allowed me to further increase the number of books I have, decrease the financial burden of buying them myself, and allow me to choose books that are high interest but sometimes hard to find at the thrift stores. When I told the students we got new books, and showed them, they were all so excited! Obviously, as a reading interventionist, I want my students to be good readers, but more importantly, I want them to love reading. Good books help me to show them how wonderful and fun reading can be. So far, the favorites are the graphic novels, the Pigeon books and the \"Who Will Win\" series books. \r\n\r\nThe pencil sharpener is a life saver because my other one made this high squeaky dying noise, and while pencil sharpeners will never be silent, this one at least doesn't require headphones when someone is using it. And speaking of headphones - my students and I are ecstatic that we now have a full set of headphones that work! This allows my students to read books online while I test them without disruption. \r\n\r\nSometimes this world is hard - and sometimes this world is so generous and nurturing and restores some faith in humanity. We completed our rocket build on December 2nd and had a terrific time! We had over 40 students present as well as a few parent helpers. Our build was led by Ms. Power from Estes Rockets. We built the Viking rocket from Estes. There was time while glue was drying to discuss parts of a rocket and basic rocket propulsion. There were great conversations about further interest in building other rockets outside of school together with friends and families. Many children asked great questions about careers in the Space Industry!\r\n\r\nThe rockets we build had the possibility of up to 5 fins so students had to choose how difficult a rocket they wanted to build. Students made a variety of choices and we ended up with some rockets with 3, 4, and 5 fins. All the students agreed that while the fins were the most fun part of the build, they were the most difficult. It was really great to watch how much student-to-student cooperation and peer assistance there was. There were a handful of students who were complete naturals at building the rocket and were helping and explaining steps to other students. The children were still talking about the build the next day. We had another snow storm over Thanksgiving Break that prevented some kids from being at school that Monday. The absent students were so excited about what they heard from the students who attended, they came and asked if there was any way they could still build a rocket. Staff members were so impressed, they offered to help the absent kids build their rockets next week when we have extra time in our schedule. A couple of parents reached out and asked if they could build the rocket with their student at home and return it to school for our launch after Christmas Break.\r\nWhen we scheduled the first field trip time with Estes Rockets, there was a stage one fire ban in El Paso County. So, we've been unable to launch our rockets yet. Our plan is to schedule our launch after the first of the year. In the meantime, volunteers are coming to safety check the children's rockets and make sure they are ready to fly. All from the response from the community to our project! It was so unexpected. It was amazing to watch the excitement in the students as they connected math concepts like measurement and planning and actually enjoyed using them. They say they are ready to tackle a more difficult rocket build next time.\r\n Our students want to \"thank you!\" and think you're \"awesome!\" for providing them the opportunity to take part in this field trip. Many of them are excited to join the after school Robotics and Rocket club! You're support is so amazing. Estes Rockets and Rogers are working together to expand the program next year. We're hoping to offer astronaut training and other rocket builds next year. We've have community members excited to help us with the program as well. It has truly been an uplifting and gratifying experience.
