Using the copy paper, velcro, and glue sticks, I've been able to build visual schedules, center icons, bathroom routines, and expectation visuals that help my students understand what to do and what to expect. These supports are especially important for my students with autism, as they rely heavily on visuals to process information, follow routines, and communicate their needs.\r\n\r\nWhen students interact with these visuals, we see more independence and less frustration. Students are beginning to transition between activities more smoothly, follow multi-step routines like bathroom and handwashing with greater success, and engage more appropriately during group activities. When students first saw the new lighting, many paused, smiled, and walked in more calmly than usual, which made a big impact on how they start their day.\r\n\r\nThis new environment is helping us continue building independence, engagement, and positive social interactions. Prior to the project, recess options were limited, which constrained student movement, peer interaction, and opportunities for collaborative play. The new equipment expanded access to safe, developmentally appropriate physical outlets that support gross motor skill development, coordination, and overall health. \r\n\r\nBeyond physical benefits, the project strengthened community culture and student leadership. The equipment created natural opportunities for teamwork, problem solving, and inclusive play, fostering stronger peer relationships and reducing conflict during unstructured time. In a Title I environment where many students face external stressors, providing a structured and joyful space for movement has had measurable impact on morale, classroom climate, and overall school pride. This investment extended beyond recreation, it reinforced the foundational conditions necessary for academic growth and emotional regulation.","fullyFundedDate":1769196406018,"projectUrl":"project/because-play-shouldnt-be-a-privilege/9981473/","projectTitle":"Because Play Shouldn’t Be a Privilege","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gonzalez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6880604_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723207497970","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6880604"},{"teacherId":1623495,"projectId":9637983,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donations to the students at our school. When students first saw the snacks, they were genuinely excited and proud, recognizing that their hard work and leadership were being acknowledged and supported. Several students shared that having a snack made them feel appreciated and helped them stay focused and motivated.\r\nThese resources will continue to support our safety patrol as students build leadership, responsibility, and teamwork skills. With basic needs met, students can concentrate on their roles—helping peers, modeling positive behavior, and ensuring safe transitions around campus. As we continue training and rotating patrol responsibilities, students will use meeting time to reflect on their experiences, problem-solve real situations, and strengthen communication skills. The students love working at a table with a lamp, and one of the great things is that the students can move the table lamp from one location in the room to another, depending on where they have chosen to work for the day. Even better, if the students tap the top of the lamp, they can change the type of light the lamp emits, and that choice gives them even more ownership of their learning. These lamps have made a significant impact on the motivation of the students I work with. Thank you for truly putting them in the best light!\r\n The light covers are not something that the students necessarily pay attention to each day, but from day one, I noticed a difference in the feel of the classroom. The light covers, by muting the flourescent overhead lights, have brought a warmth to the classroom. It feels good to be in the classroom!
