Students are learning to choose books that match their interests and reading levels, to compare how different authors develop a theme, and to talk with one another about what they are reading in book clubs and partner conversations. Having real choice in front of them has made lessons on inference, character motivation, and author's purpose feel like discovery instead of a worksheet.\r\nReading in our classroom now looks like something you would love to walk in on. Some mornings you would find kids curled up on a rug with a graphic novel, others huddled in pairs debating what a character should have done differently, and still others quietly working through a chapter book they picked because the cover finally caught their eye. We use these books during independent reading time, in small guided groups, and as mentor texts when we study writing, so the library touches almost every part of our literacy block.\r\nA few students in particular have blossomed because of this project. One of my most reluctant readers, a boy who used to avoid books altogether, found a series about young athletes and has now finished four books in it, asking every week if we have the next one.
