It has helped make our classroom feel warmer and more inviting while creating opportunities for students to connect, participate, and grow together as a classroom community.\r\n\r\nThank you so much to our generous donors for making this project possible! Your support has made a meaningful difference in our daily learning environment and has given my students a special place to feel comfortable and connected. Moving forward, I hope to continue building a classroom that feels like a second home by adding more flexible seating options. These books brought history, science, and sports to life in our classroom, allowing students to explore the lives of inspiring people and discover how determination, hard work, and perseverance can lead to success.\r\n\r\nOur students especially loved learning about Albert Einstein, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, and many other influential individuals. They were excited to discover interesting facts about these remarkable people, learn about the challenges they faced, and see how their talents and dedication helped shape their lives. Having a variety of biographies allowed students to explore topics that interested them, making reading more engaging and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThese books also provided wonderful opportunities to strengthen important literacy and research skills. Students practiced identifying main ideas and supporting details, determining the importance of key events, summarizing information, expanding their vocabulary, and distinguishing important facts from additional details. They learned how to organize information chronologically by creating timelines that highlighted significant events in each person's life.\r\n\r\nTo bring their learning to life, students also created biography soda bottles! This hands-on project allowed them to creatively showcase important facts, accomplishments, and milestones about the person they studied. Students took pride in sharing their learning through these unique projects, combining reading comprehension, research, writing, and creativity.\r\n\r\nOur classroom became a place where students were eager to read, ask questions, share discoveries, and learn from one another. Students who are particularly motivated by sports enjoyed reading about athletes such as LeBron James and Derek Jeter, while others were fascinated by scientists and inventors like Albert Einstein. This variety helped students find books that connected to their interests and encouraged them to read with greater curiosity and enthusiasm.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly grateful to our donors for making these learning experiences possible. This book was the perfect way to begin our school year, helping us build a strong classroom community while reminding students that everyone learns differently and that each person has unique strengths and talents.\r\n\r\nOur students loved getting to know Ally, the main character, and following her journey as she discovered that struggling in school does not mean she isn't smart. Her story sparked meaningful conversations about perseverance, self-confidence, kindness, and the importance of recognizing that there is more than one way to learn. Students connected with Ally's experiences and reflected on how their own strengths can help them overcome challenges. The book also helped establish an important message for our classroom: mistakes are opportunities to learn, asking for help is a strength, and everyone deserves to feel valued and supported.\r\n\r\nReading Fish in a Tree provided wonderful opportunities to strengthen essential literacy skills. As we read, students practiced making inferences, analyzing character development, identifying themes, exploring vocabulary, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. Through partner discussions, whole-class conversations, and written responses, students learned to look beyond the events of the story and consider the deeper messages the author wanted readers to understand.\r\n\r\nThe novel was especially meaningful for students who sometimes find reading or other academic tasks challenging. Seeing Ally work through obstacles helped students recognize that difficulties do not define their abilities or their potential. Students were excited to share their thoughts, make connections to the characters, and celebrate Ally's successes along the way.\r\n\r\nBeginning the school year with Fish in a Tree helped us create a classroom environment rooted in empathy, perseverance, and acceptance. The lessons from this book will continue to guide us throughout the year as students learn to support one another, embrace their individual strengths, and approach challenges with confidence.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly grateful to our donors for making this shared reading experience possible. Having a copy of the same book allows students to read together, share their thinking, and engage in meaningful conversations about characters, themes, and the deeper messages authors communicate through their stories.\r\n\r\nAs we read The Tiger Rising, students explore themes of friendship, grief, courage, and the importance of expressing emotions. Through Esperanza Rising, students examine perseverance, resilience, empathy, and how people respond to change and adversity. Both novels provide opportunities to strengthen vocabulary, develop reading fluency, practice making inferences, cite text evidence, and analyze character development. Students are learning to look beyond the words on the page to understand how characters grow and how stories connect to real-life experiences.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active and collaborative experience. Students participate in teacher-guided read-alouds, partner discussions, small-group instruction, vocabulary exploration, and written responses supported by evidence from the text. These shared reading experiences encourage students to ask questions, make predictions, defend their ideas, and listen respectfully to different perspectives.\r\n\r\nThese books are especially valuable for students who benefit from additional support with reading. Having engaging, grade-level literature allows all students to participate in rich discussions and build confidence while strengthening essential literacy skills. Students who may struggle with reading independently can still experience the excitement of a meaningful story, develop a deeper understanding of the text, and feel successful as members of our reading community.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these classroom sets help foster a love of reading. They give students the opportunity to connect with memorable characters, explore new perspectives, and discover that books can help us better understand ourselves and others.
