One of my goals for my sophomore students is to encourage a habit of reading for pleasure, and these books will go a long way toward meeting that goal.\r\n\r\nThe research is pretty clear that reading has important benefits for teens. It helps them academicially by providing a chance to practice focus and stamina with longer texts. Reading also exposes students to rich vocabulary in authentic context which transfers into academic and practical applications. There is also the benefit of empathy -- reading about other people's experiences widens a reader's view of the world. Additionally, stopping to focus attention on a book is a great way to regulate a teen's nervous system. I point out these benefits often, hoping that my students will choose to read on their own time.\r\n\r\nYour gift along with the time provided in class will hopefully lead to my students becoming lifelong readers. Teaching through the pandemic was by far the hardest part of my 22 year teaching career. Motivators and incentives of the past did not work on this new generation of learners. I was ready to quit teaching and start selling solar door-to-door. I'm also a mom and had similar experiences with my own children. They did not respond to previous parenting cues. Over the summer, I attended a professional development and the speaker reminded me that no one responds to threats of negative consequences and you get so much more productivity and cooperation when you focus on the positive. That was a real lightbulb moment for me. Although I knew this, I didn't make the connection between my own struggles and those of my students. I decided to start the year with positivity and planned to reward students who were following directions. My focus would shift to acknowledging all the good things happening in my classroom instead of worrying about all the things my students were not doing. It has been a game changer. I thought high school students would not respond to pull back race cars and glow in the dark tattoos, but they did. Now they clean up without complaining. The ceramics treasure chest has been a big with me and my 247 students.","fullyFundedDate":1733260893618,"projectUrl":"project/mrs-mitchells-high-school-treasure-che/8793510/","projectTitle":"Mrs. Mitchell's High School Treasure Chest","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mitchell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9754107_orig.jpg?crop=1428,1428,x154,y872&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744298514509","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9754107"},{"teacherId":9584962,"projectId":8551868,"letterContent":"I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks for your generous donation that enabled us to purchase slinkies for our Physics department at Riverton High School. Your contribution has made a significant impact on our student's learning experience, particularly in our unit on waves. The slinkies have prove to be an invaluable tool, allowing our students to engage in hands-on learning that enhances their understanding of complex Physics concepts in a fun and interactive way.\r\n One of the challenges in teaching Physics is helping students visualize and grasp abstract concepts such as longitudinal and transverse waves. The addition of these slinkies has transformed the way we teach! We can also use a game-based approach, students can now physically experience an abstract concept! This is so much more engaging that just reading about waves in textbooks or seeing them on a screen.\r\nThe croquet sets also provided students with the opportunity to apply the mathematical principles of elastic collisions in a real-world setting. After playing a round of croquet and observing the collisions, they would calculate the initial and final velocities of the balls and compare these to theoretical predictions. It was incredible to see the excitement and engagement from students as they realized that the Physics they were learning in the classroom was directly applicable to real-world situations. This interactive approach to learning has not only increased student engagement but has also deepened their understanding of core Physics concepts.\r\n On behalf of our students and staff, I want to extend our sincere gratitude for your generosity. The slinkies will continue to be an essential teaching tool for years to come, benefitting not only this year's students but future classes as well. Your support has enabled us to create a learning environment that is interactive, engaging, and truly effective in fostering a deep understanding of Physics concepts.\r\nThank you once again for your commitment to education and for helping to make Physics more accessible and enjoyable for our students.","fullyFundedDate":1733248267012,"projectUrl":"project/making-the-invisible-world-appear-in-the/8551868/","projectTitle":"Making the Invisible World Appear in Their Own Hands!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Crapo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9584962_orig.jpg?crop=1512,1512,x0,y100&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720316252503","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9584962"},{"teacherId":9713772,"projectId":8714463,"letterContent":"Your generous contribution has made a significant impact in the educational journey of numerous students by providing them with essential calculators. These calculators are not just tools; they are gateways to understanding complex mathematical concepts and solving problems that are integral to their academic success. By equipping students with these devices, you've enabled them to actively participate in their math classes, conduct experiments in science labs, and build confidence in their problem-solving abilities. This crucial support has leveled the playing field for students who otherwise might have struggled to keep up with their peers due to a lack of resources. Your donation has directly contributed to creating an equitable learning environment, where all students have the opportunity to succeed regardless of their financial background.\r\n\r\nWith the ability to explore mathematical problems more deeply, students are developing critical thinking skills that are essential for their future careers. This increased engagement also fosters a more positive attitude towards education as a whole, encouraging students to pursue further studies in STEM fields. Your investment in these calculators is, therefore, an investment in the future, nurturing the potential of young minds who will become tomorrow's innovators and leaders. Each day, during independent reading time, students walk over to the library, select new books, or ask me for recommendations. It has been a joy to see students reading books that represent them and for others to read books that help them learn something new. Two specific students have really shown me the importance and power of reading.\r\n\r\nOne student just recently moved to the U.S. and doesn't speak much English yet. All day everyday his teachers and peers speak to him in a language he is still learning, and it has been difficult for him. I gave him a Spanish-translated copy of \"Wonder\" by R. J. Palacio, and he has been devouring it. I have loved seeing him involve himself in this class activity.\r\n\r\nAnother student of mine recently read one of the new graphic novels that was donated. He is a self-proclaimed hater-of-reading, but he said that it was the best book he's ever read, and he started reading another graphic novel from the library.
