When the supplies first arrived, students who stopped by my office immediately explored them and quickly discovered their favorites. Since then, whenever they return, they make a beeline for those favorites to use while we talk—or during lunch groups.\r\n\r\nAt times, a fidget comes with me into a classroom, and a student realizes just how helpful it is for them. I leave it with the student (and the teacher) after explaining that it's meant to support them, not distract. It helps the student stay calm and engaged in their learning, and I'm always sure to get it back at the end of the day.\r\n\r\nOther times, a student comes to my office feeling upset and naturally gravitates toward a particular item. Having something to hold or use helps them calm down while we talk. Depending on the situation, I may allow the student to bring it back to class for a short time, with the teacher's approval, and I make sure it's returned by the end of the day.\r\n\r\nSome of the students' favorites are the stress balls, as they're unlike the typical ones we're used to. They feel as though there are smaller balls inside, adding an extra sensory layer that students absolutely love. The bendable strips that click together are another popular choice. Students can manipulate them in so many ways, often connecting the pieces to create a necklace or even a crown. They seem to really enjoy having the chance to create something with their hands while we talk. Both are calming while discussing things that may not be so happy.\r\n\r\nThe books will be especially helpful for group work and more targeted check-ins with students. While these resources could benefit everyone, not all students need them year-round. I pull what's most relevant for the students I'm supporting and save the rest until it's needed.\r\n\r\nThese resources not only help my students relax as they process what's happening in their minds, but they've also helped make my office a welcoming, go-to space. Students who weren't even on my radar now eagerly ask to come by. Having these tools available allows all students—and even adults—to regulate themselves in any situation and work through whatever they're experiencing.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity and willingness to help my students. Not only that, but it helps me create the type of space I've always imagined for my students - relaxing, productive, and welcoming.","fullyFundedDate":1761418134124,"projectUrl":"project/making-magic-happen-the-art-of-school-c/9488581/","projectTitle":"Making Magic Happen: the Art of School Counseling","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. B","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9522881_orig.jpg?crop=768,768,x0,y202&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753150353661","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9522881"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61809","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":770,"numTeachers":48,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":35,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":50,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":54.2,"schoolId":61809,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Riverside Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Riverside Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/riverside-township-public-school-district/riverside-elementary-school/61809"}
