My district is in a high poverty area and many of my students have ADHD, are English Language learners, and have little to no support at home. I have students who have suffered abuse, abandonment, and have seen, first hand, the devastation of drug addiction. At least half of my students have focusing difficulties, and I usually have to sing and dance to keep their attention. One little girl is quite brilliant, but she had difficulty focusing to complete her work. She, along with many others, has a hard time sitting and constantly needs to move about the room. I have English Language learners who struggle to keep up with the Common Core Curriculum because they have not acquired the vocabulary to understand the lessons. Many of my students do not have their basic needs met at home, therefore, I need to make sure all of their needs are met at school. All of my students deserve a safe, nurturing, environment that is conducive to learning.
