My students were so excited to see the materials arrive. I don't think they thought the project would come to fruition until the materials showed up!\r\n\r\nTo make the totems students worked in groups of three, and after learning about the history and function of totem poles, they began designing their California and community-themed totems. Each student had to create two objects for the totem stack that equaled one foot. This challenged the students to mathematically problem-solve because they had to allow for the natural shrinkage rate of clay and any stacking / nesting issues that might arise from of one piece fitting into the next piece. Some students had to make additional pieces to meet the three foot requirement. The objects were made from the clay that we received, and then colored with all of the great glaze colors that we received. Students stacked the objects on 6 separate steel stands crafted by our welding class in order to make the six totem poles.\r\n \r\nStudents learned to collaborate and work through some difficult issues, not only with materials, but with working together as a team. Students also learned many interesting and surprising things about the state of California and it's history, and students learned to make clay objects on a much larger scale than they were used to which challenged a few students to push through their comfort zones. Students also realized how important math is to every day applications. \r\n\r\nOverall, I feel like this was a tremendous learning experience for my students, and one that has made the kids proud of what they have accomplished and contributed to their community.\r\n\r\nMy students and I want to express our deepest gratitude for your generous donations. We could not have had this amazing learning experience without your support, and now we have beautiful artifacts","fullyFundedDate":1769192044832,"projectUrl":"project/clay-totem-poles-incorporating-history/9907130/","projectTitle":"Clay Totem Poles: Incorporating History, Culture, and Tradition","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Schulz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10025763"},{"teacherId":7152496,"projectId":9676527,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping me keep the door open for all of the students at my school.
