We had a final project for the career readiness class, where students formed groups and collaborated to create a mock candle-making booth. The students chose a name for their company, a poster, a slogan, and figured out the cost to make a candle and what to sell it for a profit. This was in May, this year we plan to work on selling them to make a profit for student field trips and projects.\r\n\r\nWe practiced making candles for our students' families. Students picked different scents and colors and seemed to master the skill. We made candles for the families as gifts. For example, the anger management book has helped a student go from 3 meltdowns a week to almost none through the end of the school year. Now, in hopes he practiced at home. We are halfway through the book and rereading it with my students reminds me why I like this book so much! \r\nThe students think that Augustus Waters is a sweet person who acts from the heart and isn't afraid to share how he feels. They also think that he is impulsive! The students also believe that he is a positive light. I am attaching photos of metaphors students came up with for Augustus. \r\nI can't wait for them to find out what happens next when the protagonists are in Amsterdam. The book progresses to a somber plot, but it's already reaching the students with the lessons it has to offer. I am uploading some sample works from students who created a one pager about an article about Ann Frank. This is preparing student to analyze the meaning of Augustus and Hazel sharing their first kiss together in the Anne Frank house. This background knowledge is also preparing them to discover themes in the book. \r\nOne of my students has already have made the connection that Anne Frank taught us to find a reason to keep going.
