Our treasure box was started last year, and this project helped us refill and keep it going strong. It has truly become a core part of our classroom routine. Students earn money for their effort, behavior, and participation, and they use it to shop for items. Having new supplies to restock the store kept their excitement and motivation going. We love being able to price things at over $100 because these kids love to compete on who has the most money or save their money for weeks on end!\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was watching a student who had been saving their money for weeks finally have enough to buy the minecraft lego set they had been wanting. They carefully counted everything and were so proud of themselves for sticking with their goal. It's moments like that that show this is about more than just rewards—it's about responsibility and pride.\r\n\r\nEven though students were already familiar with the system, they were so excited to see the store restocked. It brought a fresh energy to the classroom and reminded them of what they're working toward. They immediately started setting goals again and encouraging each other.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we'll continue using our class store to support positive behavior and build real-life skills like saving, decision-making, and responsibility. It is very important for young musicians to be exposed to a variety of instruments, and the keyboards add a much needed level of musicianship to the classroom. \r\n\r\nMy fourth and fifth graders have already played every instrument in my music class at this point, so when they found out that we were going to learn keyboards, they were so excited. Every week when they come into music class they will look around to see if the keyboards are out on the ground or not, and smiles come across all their faces when they are going to be in use.\r\n\r\nMy older students had been learning their lines and spaces on the treble clef, but we did not have any pitched instruments in the classroom for students to be able to show that they had mastered where the notes were or how to dictate on the staff. Having the pianos in the classroom was an amazing addition because we had a whole unit where students learned the basics of how to play the piano, and then were given time to make their own melodic and rhythmic dictations on paper using the piano as a guide.
