Using the graphic novel as a scaffold and supplement to the original text worked even better than I had hoped. Students read the graphic novel first, and even students who are generally resistant to reading were immediately taken in by the vivid illustrations and direct story-telling. It was wonderful to see them move from an initial stance of \"I hate reading, so I'm not going to do this,\" which is often code for \"I'm afraid it's going to be hard and I am embarrassed to show that I'm struggling, so I'm not going to try,\" to making thoughtful observations about the text that demonstrated their understanding of Douglass's life and the broader historical context. The photos I included are notes taken by a couple of my students who went through this transformation. After students finished the graphic novel, most of them went on to read Douglass's full original narrative successfully, which they would not have been able to do if they had not already been familiar with the story. My students have now had the chance to use these items many times. The factor triangles have made an impact on learning. Having the different colored pieces allowed my students to visually see when they reached the final step! \r\n\r\nSome of the most useful items received were the clear pocket pouches and dry erase markers. Having the ability to slide different papers into the clear pocket pouch has allowed for less paper to be used saving it for other purposes. Not only can a single sheet of paper be placed in the pouch for easier viewing of work when using a dry erase marker, but also the fact that graph paper, worksheets, and more can be slide into the pouch when solving. This is a necessity with my students. It allows for quick erasing and the ability to try different strategies for solving without using multiple sheets of paper.\r\n\r\nThank you for the ability to provide these resources for my students.
