Through this project, students were able to engage in a hands-on project that allowed them to put themselves in the position of astronauts going to the moon! Students read about the life story of Leland Melvin, and saw the perspective of a an astronaut who overcame many hurdles and prejudices in his life to achieve incredible things! We drew parallels between characters and ourselves, or people we knew in our own lives, and students were able to make valuable connections between the classwork they engaged in and the information shared in Leland Melvin's story.\r\n\r\nThrough our hands-on moon colony project, which is still on-going, students are creating models, blueprints, and applying engineering concepts with hands-on materials that allow them to immerse themselves into scientific processes that simulate real-world actions.\r\n\r\nDuring the month of February, students learned about the lives of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan - the women featured in the book and film Hidden Figures - and important topics connecting civil rights with social and scientific advancement were discussed. Students also learned the story of Nichelle Nichols and Mae Jemison.\r\n\r\nMany students admitted they had never seen space science, travel, or aerospace engineering as a real, physical concept - something they could touch, engage with, learn and even consider as a future! Through this project, several students have learned about themselves and how much they enjoy aerospace science, and are hoping to pursue further learning in that topic in the future!\r\n\r\nThese projects would never have been possible without the generous donations provided, we are so grateful to you!","fullyFundedDate":1728001237102,"projectUrl":"project/everyone-belongs-on-the-moon-celebratin/8689507/","projectTitle":"Everyone Belongs on the Moon! These days, in the world of social media, instant gratification, and online access to just about anything, it is especially important that we do everything we can to encourage reading and ENJOYING reading. \r\n Having the books in print enables my students to dig into the novel in a different way than just listening to the audio book or watching the movie. My goal is to help them understand the connections between fact and fiction, past and present (and even future), and I'm positive that the novel will enhance their learning of Ancient Rome, the hero's journey, and what it means when someone says, \"Oh! I never imagined it would turn out to be such an impactful experience.\r\nAll of the students are enamored of the rabbits, everyone is fascinated by their size and their demeanor. The house that we erected for them has enabled all students in our school to have daily access to the rabbits, and our sixth graders take great pride in caring for them and being responsible for them. They often are teaching the older students how to approach the rabbits, how to be patient with them, how to act around them, and how to care for them.\r\nThe biggest reward is how some of our more challenging students have created strong bonds with the rabbits and spend time with them every day. These students also love to feed and water the rabbits, and watch over them. It gives the students a purpose, and it has helped to improve their behavior and mood through caring for another creature and being able to sit and spend some gentle time with them. \r\nI could not have asked for a better outcome, and I appreciate all of your generosity in sponsoring my project!","fullyFundedDate":1728384931823,"projectUrl":"project/all-creatures-great-small-caring-for/8849791/","projectTitle":"All Creatures Great & Small: Caring for a Classroom Pet","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hyder","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9643619_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y223&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728220616582","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9643619"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_123267","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":69,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":52,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 10","studentTeacherRatio":"9.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":86.4,"schoolId":123267,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Resilience Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Resilience Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/alachua-county-school-district/resilience-charter-school/123267"}
