In my Journalism and Yearbook classes, students are learning much more than simply how to take a picture. They are learning about composition, lighting, focus, perspective, timing, and how to capture images that tell a story. The camera allows them to take what they learn in the classroom and immediately apply it to real school events, sports, activities, and everyday moments. It is also helping students understand how photography plays an important role in journalism and visual storytelling.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is being able to use a professional-style camera and see the difference it can make in their photography. Many of them are accustomed to taking pictures with their smart phones, so using a dedicated dslr camera feels like a new experience. They enjoy experimenting with different shots- wide, medium, close-up, learning how the camera works, and seeing the quality of the images they can produce. There is also a sense of pride when they see their photographs being considered for the yearbook or used to document important moments at our school.\r\n\r\nMy students who have interests in photography, journalism, sports, art, and creative media have especially embraced the camera. I have also been pleasantly surprised by some students who were initially quiet or less engaged in traditional classroom activities. Once they were given the camera and a specific purpose for using it, they became much more involved. They began looking for interesting moments to photograph, asking questions about camera settings, and thinking more carefully about what makes a photograph meaningful.
