I want to thank you so much for the binoculars, nature identification guides, cooking equipment, and mushroom growing kits. We went on 24 outdoor learning trips that school year (2021-2022), including many trips to the waterfront and throughout our community to identify native plants and birds. That school year culminated in building a native garden in our school yard to attract pollinators and migrating birds. \r\n\r\nWe also cooked 10 vegan dishes, and turned many mushroom skeptics into mushroom lovers. We even ended the year camping overnight in the Pennsylvania forest. This was an incredible experience for our students, as many of them have never left Brooklyn, much less the small nook of Red Hook. It has been 4 years, but we still use those binoculars for our field expectations to Governors Island for our annual Bioblitz, and have incorporated mushroom cultivation into our sustainable cooking course.\r\n\r\nIt is actually incredible to reflect back on how these resources were a root for so many of our thriving programs. These materials enabled one of my students to design a water level monitoring sensor system (that plays the Harry Potter theme song, of course...) and an air quality sensor that she programmed herself. They enabled our entire 6th grade class to laser cut architectural models they designed themselves to construct proposals for a shipping container we are redesigning as an outdoor field station. We want to send a huge \"Thank You\" to all the donors kind enough to donate the snacks needed to keep our students engaged in achieving academic success without focusing on being hungry. \r\nThe snack pantry is open for business everyday from 1:10 pm to about 4:00pm. During the school day, students getting snacks get a chance to sit in the Counseling office, eat a snack, and engage in meaningful conversation about school life with a Wellness Team member. We set up buckets with donated items such as fruit cups, goldfish, fruit snacks, fruit roll ups, pirate booty puffs, pop chips, utz potato chips, nutri grain bars, and the list goes on. Students come in, get a snack, and write down what they picked. Based on the data, the mandarin orange fruit cups and other fruit cup choices are a huge success. We are happy to see our students making healthier choices by choosing fruit. \r\nThe donations have also allowed our school wellness team to interact with students who may not have the opportunity to engage in academic or social emotional conversations on a daily basis. Students don't seem as frustrated because they are focused on hunger. Students recognize the snack pantry as a place to get their hunger needs met so they can focus on academic achievement. \r\nAs we focus on the next school year of 2025-2026, we plan to make the snack pantry a permanent part of our school goals and culture.","fullyFundedDate":1734375379959,"projectUrl":"project/snack-pantry-beating-after-lunch-hunger/8714544/","projectTitle":"Snack Pantry BEATING After lunch HUNGER Odds!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. O","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7226932"},{"teacherId":9852103,"projectId":8982758,"letterContent":"I hope this letter finds you well. I am expressing my deepest gratitude for your generous donation to my DonorsChoose campaign. Your kindness and willingness to invest in my student's education mean more than words can truly express.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher, I see firsthand the impact that resources and opportunities have on young minds. When I started this campaign, I hoped to provide my students with the tools they need to succeed, but I never imagined how quickly and selflessly people like you would step in to help make that dream a reality. Because of your generosity, my students now have access to [specific resources funded, e.g., new books, technology, art supplies, flexible seating, etc.], which will enrich their learning experience in ways that will last a lifetime.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we strive to create an engaging and dynamic learning environment where every student feels empowered to explore, create, and grow. However, many of my students face challenges outside of school that make learning more difficult. Some come from low-income households, others from families where English is not their first language, and access to chart paper, post-it notes, pencils, and fidgets helps meet the needs of all our diverse learners. Your donation has not only provided materials but has also given them a sense of excitement and curiosity that will inspire them to reach new heights.\r\n\r\nSince receiving these resources, I have already seen an incredible difference in my students' engagement and enthusiasm. When we brought out the model atoms for the students to work with, students were so excited to dive deep into intermolecular forces. Seeing them use these models to dive deep into the inquiry process is inspiring as a first-year teacher.\r\n\r\nI always want to thank for filling the donations of colored ink, which was helpful throughout the school, not just the 7th grade, as it helped students have the necessary printouts for modeling of key equations and systems to boost engagement compared to the traditional learning model. \r\n\r\nYour donation is more than just a financial contribution; it is a message to my students that their education matters, that there are people in the world who believe in them, and that they are capable of achieving great things. This act of kindness has given them confidence and motivation, and I do not doubt that the ripple effect will be felt for years to come. \r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you for choosing to support our classroom. Your generosity and compassion are truly making a difference, and I want you to know that you are now a part of our classroom family. Thanks to your donations, we now have beautiful new books for our classroom library, comfortable seating, and all of the supplies that we need to facilitate hands-on, arts-based activities to teach crucial Humanities skills. \r\n\r\nOne of our goals for our 7th graders is that each student builds the habit of reading independently outside of school. We have found that our students are most likely to complete their reading homework when they have books that they are excited to dive into. As such, we have tried to furnish our classroom library with lots of new books in a variety of genres and levels so that each student can connect with a book that they love. With your help, our library has an even greater variety of books, and many of our new books are in series so that if a student falls in love with the first book they can keep their momentum going! Some students' eyes lit up when they saw the full box set of the Harry Potter series, while others couldn't wait to get their hands on The Last Kids On Earth books. Our budding readers are ready to grow their skills thanks to your generosity. \r\n\r\nIn our project-based Humanities classroom, learning is hands-on, creative, and kinetic. Students are using our brand new cushions to create learning spaces for small groups outside of their desks, where they can work in the environments in which they learn best. We are so grateful to the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation for matching each donation and making it possible for us to engage our students' interest and imagination through multiple mediums and modalities. \r\n\r\nThank you all so much for your donations.
