Because the pieces are irregular, they are developing problem-solving skills and learning to adjust their designs when something doesn't work.\r\n\r\nI've also loved seeing the collaboration—students are working together, sharing ideas, and encouraging one another as they build. One student exclaimed, \"It looks like a rainbow house!\" while another noticed how the same block looked different depending on where it was placed. Their curiosity sparked rich conversations about colors, shapes, and reflections.\r\n\r\nDuring our STEM center time, students have been using the wooden gem blocks and mirror pyramids to design towers, castles, and colorful patterns. In one special moment, a small group worked together to build what they called a \"crystal city.\" They carefully balanced the blocks and used the mirror pyramids to see their structure from new angles. This naturally led to discussions about symmetry, balance, and how to keep their structure from falling—early engineering thinking in action!\r\n\r\nStudents are also strengthening fine motor skills as they carefully stack, sort, and position the pieces. Just as importantly, they are practicing collaboration by sharing materials, communicating ideas, and working together to create.\r\n\r\nThe storage tubs have made a big difference as well. Students are learning responsibility by independently accessing and cleaning up materials, which helps our centers run smoothly and keeps learning time focused on exploration.\r\n\r\nNext, we will be extending this learning by encouraging students to make predictions about how light and reflections will change when we move materials, add new shapes, or build taller structures. We will also begin using the materials for pattern-building challenges and simple design tasks that introduce early math and engineering concepts.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students are not just playing—they are investigating, designing, and discovering.
