Through texts such as Refugee, A Long Walk to Water, Number the Stars, The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963, Chains, and March: Book One, students are able to strengthen important literacy skills while also making meaningful connections to history and the world around them. We use these texts to practice identifying themes, analyzing characters, citing textual evidence, making inferences, comparing perspectives, and examining how historical events influence people's experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom goes beyond simply finishing a book. Students annotate texts, highlight important details, use sticky notes to track their thinking, respond to reading questions, participate in discussions, and complete written responses using evidence from what they have read. The primary-source materials, geography cards, and atlases also allow students to connect their ELA skills to Social Studies. Students can locate the places they encounter in texts, analyze historical documents and images, and develop a better understanding of the cultures, events, and people we study.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest benefits of this project is the variety of books now available to students. Not every student connects with the same type of text, so having traditional novels, graphic novels, historical fiction, realistic fiction, and nonfiction gives more students an opportunity to find something that interests them. Books such as New Kid, Invisible, and the I Survived graphic novel are particularly helpful for students who may feel intimidated by longer chapter books but still need engaging, age-appropriate reading experiences.\r\n\r\nThese materials have helped us create a classroom where literacy and Social Studies work together. Students are not only learning how to become stronger readers and writers; they are also learning about different cultures, historical events, geography, perseverance, identity, friendship, and the experiences of people around the world. Because of our donors' generosity, my students have resources they can physically hold, annotate, discuss, explore, and learn from every day.
