When students have their own copies of a novel, reading becomes much more active and personal. Students are able to annotate in their books, highlight important passages, mark sections of the text where they may feel confused, and track character development as the story unfolds. This ownership of the text helps students engage more deeply with the novel. It also allows them to read at home and ensure they don't miss out on any key portions of the story should they happen to miss school! \r\n\r\nThrough reading The Outsiders, students practiced a variety of important literacy skills. We analyzed characterization, the negative impacts of stereotyping, examined how point of view shapes the story, and explored major themes such as identity, belonging, and the impact of social class. Students also worked on supporting their ideas with textual evidence. Learning these skills and discussing these topics not only helps students become stronger readers, but also helps expand their worldview. \r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is very interactive. We read together, pause to discuss key moments, and often have students work in small groups to share ideas and interpretations. Students frequently mark meaningful quotes, ask questions about the characters' decisions, and make predictions about what will happen next. These discussions help students see that literature is something to be actively explored--not passively consumed. \r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially excited about the novel. Many connected deeply with the characters and the struggles they face, which sparked meaningful conversations about empathy, perspective, and conflict resolution. Witnessing students discuss the Greasers and the Socs, debate characters' choices, and find ways to relate to them has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nBecause of the materials provided through this project, I was able to create a richer and more meaningful reading experience for my students. Instead of relying on limited shared copies, every student had access to the text and could participate fully in lessons and discussions. Your generosity helped create an environment where students could more deeply connect with literature and develop stronger reading and thinking skills. Thank you for helping make this experience possible for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1764598431384,"projectUrl":"project/stay-gold-helping-my-8th-graders-discov/9873119/","projectTitle":"Stay Gold: Helping My 8th Graders Discover The Outsiders","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Holley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10242282_orig.jpg?crop=3456,3456,x864,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757282574996","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10242282"},{"teacherId":10242282,"projectId":9684313,"letterContent":"My students absolutely loved reading Scythe by Neal Shusterman—several even said it was their favorite book they've ever read. What made this experience especially enjoyable was that students had their own copies of the novel, allowing them to personalize their books, annotate freely, and truly immerse themselves in Shusterman's world. The text opened the door to engaging conversations about the impact of AI and technology on the human race, the value of human life, and the fragile nature of mortality.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active and hands-on: students annotate, ask questions in the margins, mark meaningful passages, and participate in frequent class discussions that help them deepen their understanding. Having their own copies empowered them to take ownership of the reading process. Many students who aren't typically enthusiastic readers became fully invested, engaging eagerly in debates, sharing interpretations, and even purchasing the full four-book series to continue reading on their own time. The transformation was incredible to watch—these books didn't just support skill development; they sparked genuine excitement and lifelong interest in reading. I am so excited to see their reaction to our other upcoming texts, such as Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1760530250248,"projectUrl":"project/putting-books-in-every-students-hands/9684313/","projectTitle":"Putting Books in Every Student's Hands.","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Holley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10242282_orig.jpg?crop=3456,3456,x864,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757282574996","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10242282"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_58085","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":310,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":80,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":94,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":55.6,"schoolId":58085,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Raceland - Worthington High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Raceland - Worthington High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/raceland-worthington-ind-sd/raceland-worthington-high-school/58085"}
