My students had the opportunity to use the kits at the end of last school year during a problem-based learning project connected to Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats. Their challenge was to design and build a chair prototype that had a back, measured between 10–12 Unifix cubes tall, and was strong enough to support a paperback book. Since the Makedo kits were new to my students and arrived so close to the project, they combined the kits with masking tape to assemble their designs using cardboard and paper towel and toilet paper tubes. Watching them explore, experiment, problem-solve, and figure out how the unfamiliar tools worked was incredibly exciting. They were engaged, creative, and proud of what they were able to build!\r\n\r\nNow that school has begun again, I have already introduced the Makedo kits to my new class, and they have been excited to explore them. Our first science unit focuses on Earth's properties, including water, soil, and rocks. I am currently planning a problem-based learning project in which students will design and create a display case or box for a collection of rocks. As students work with the Makedo tools, I have noticed how much hands-on skill and fine-motor development is naturally built into the experience. Students use their fingers and hands to poke holes in cardboard with the special tip on the screwdriver, apply force and maintain a strong grip while holding and cutting cardboard, and carefully turn the small screws to connect pieces. These are meaningful opportunities for students to strengthen their hands while also practicing persistence, planning, collaboration, and problem-solving. Later this year, this class will have another opportunity to design and build a chair prototype connected to Peter's Chair. I am excited to see how much more confident and capable they will be after having multiple opportunities throughout the year to explore, create, revise, and build with Makedo.
