The books and resources you provided have given my students engaging, age-appropriate ways to learn about skills that are essential for success both inside and outside of the classroom. Through these materials, we have been exploring important executive functioning skills such as maintaining attention, ignoring distractions, organizing thoughts, flexible thinking, self-control, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and perseverance when something feels difficult.\r\n\r\nReading in our speech-language therapy sessions is highly interactive. Rather than simply reading a story from beginning to end, we pause to discuss the characters' thoughts, feelings, choices, and problems. Students make predictions, answer questions, identify cause-and-effect relationships, and connect situations in the books to their own experiences. We then discuss strategies the characters could use and practice applying those same strategies to real-life situations. This allows us to work on executive functioning while simultaneously strengthening vocabulary, comprehension, reasoning, expressive language, and social-pragmatic communication.\r\n\r\nMy students have especially enjoyed books and activities that present challenges they recognize from their own school experiences, such as becoming distracted, having difficulty staying on task, managing strong emotions, or adjusting when things do not go as expected. Seeing these experiences represented in stories makes these sometimes-abstract skills much easier to understand and talk about. The hands-on activities and sensory resources have also helped make our lessons more engaging and accessible to students with different learning needs. Watching their structures gradually come together gives them something tangible to work toward and encourages them to complete additional practice trials. I was able to punch holes for students to use as their faces. The whole school came together to create a mural that is hanging outside my room. \r\n\r\nMy students are so engaged in coming to art and seeing what new projects they are working on next, with addition of new materials like paper crimpers and hole punchers we can take an old project and give it a little jazz!
