My students attend a PreK to 5 elementary school in New York. Our school is located in one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation. Many of my students have special needs, or are struggling academically to achieve grade level expectations. Despite their challenges, my students are excited about science and the opportunity they have to engage with our classroom pet. The pleasure they gain from caring for our rabbit has immensely increased their awareness of caring for another living thing. They are bright and cheerful even though they inhabit a world that may not be so vibrant. Their labels mean nothing in my classroom because my students are eager to learn and to explore.
