Because of your generosity, all of the kindergarten students got to create and test models to demonstrate the physics topics in this unit. \r\nWe learned that a force is a push or pull which can be exerted by another object that is still or moving. A foot kicks a ball up, and the Earth's gravity pulls it down. Motion is the changing of position or location in a direction. But a force must be exerted to cause that change. We practiced identifying forces, and using them to change the motion of objects in the desired ways. We got objects to change direction, speed, and the distance of travel. \r\nThe culminating project for this unit was that each child build and tested (aka played with) their very own pinball machine! They created launchers to initiate the motion of the ball, flippers and bumpers to change the direction of the motion, targets at various positions, etc. And they used a lot of stickers.\r\nI am so proud of all of the kindergarten students for thinking critically, taking risks, and accepting responsibility for their work. This was not only a lesson in physics, but also in independence and creativity.\r\nYour kind support is the only thing that truly made this project possible. Over the last few years the Scholastic News Magazine subscription has had such a positive impact on my students and their learning. The magazines have allowed my students to see and learn that reading is all around them, not just in a book in the library. Furthermore, the content in the magazines has broadened their understanding of the world around them and has provided them with opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions around current events and issues.\r\n\r\nThe magazines also serve as a powerful teaching resource for my students. For example, my students have been working very hard on the concepts of \"main idea\" and \"supporting details,\" which are critical to their ability to analyze a text. The magazine articles allow my students to practice finding the \"pop out\" sentence in the text and then look for three details that support the main idea. Also, the \"debate\" section of the magazine allows my students to develop their own opinions and support their opinions with evidence. Being able to teach skill and strategy work through high interest material results in much higher student engagement and that is exactly what the Scholastic Magazine does for my students.\r\n\r\nSeeing my students' faces light up every time I introduce a new Scholastic News issue is a true pleasure, and it is all due to your generosity.
