I work at a small school in central Harlem that hasn't had a music program in over 7 years. I have just begun rebuilding the program from the ground up and the addition of these ukuleles really helped me to connect with the upper grades- Kids who were \"too cool\" for music suddenly became interested in participating when presented with these ukuleles!\r\n\r\nStudents were over the moon when they saw that the ukuleles were in different colors. While class used to begin with a large amount of talking, they are now quick to settle down and focus because they know that the students who are on task get to pick their choice color of ukulele first!!\r\n\r\nI particularly wanted to share the success I have been having with my school's 12:1 class. Since using these ukuleles, I have seen enormous improvement in their interpersonal skills, sense of self, responsibility, and overall excitment to participate in class. Our end of year concert is coming up and they are about to perform the song \"Riptide\" by Vance Joy. This is HUGE considering they refused to even participate in the winter concert!!! These instruments have given them the confidence to perform on stage.\r\n\r\nThe younger grades have also begun to notice these instruments being played and carted around (I am on a cart, so I bring them back and forth to classrooms) and have already been asking when it is their turn to learn how to play them!\r\n\r\nI cannot thank you enough for your generosity. It has made a huge difference in the lives of the students I teach. I cannot wait to continue teaching on these ukuleles for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1772131286331,"projectUrl":"project/first-year-music-program-in-harlem/9980930/","projectTitle":"First Year Music Program in Harlem","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gaunt","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10232221_orig.png?crop=593,593,x42,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756494110877","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10232221"},{"teacherId":5685548,"projectId":9961922,"letterContent":"To our wonderful supporters: we are so incredibly grateful for your recent contribution to our Harlem special education program. At this young and important stage of development, every resource makes a meaningful difference, and your kindness has had an immediate and positive impact on my students. I am incredibly grateful for your investment in our little learners.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, students are just beginning to learn how to be part of a school community this year. They are learning how to sit in a group, listen to others, take turns, and manage their big emotions. These skills do not always come easily at three years old, which is why the resources you provided are so valuable.\r\n\r\nThe rocking chairs have been especially helpful during circle time. Having this flexible seating option supports their bodies and helps them stay engaged in a developmentally appropriate way. The sensory toys have also become an important part of our daily routine. At three years old, children are still learning how to calm their bodies and express their feelings appropriately. When students begin to feel overwhelmed, excited, or upset, the sensory tools provide comfort and support. They help students regulate their emotions during circle time, transitions, and quiet moments. The maze cubes and liquid sensory windows have been wonderful additions to our calm-down space. When students need a break, these tools give them a safe and soothing way to reset. \r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, our classroom is more supportive, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of young children. You are helping create an environment where students feel safe, understood, and cared for.\r\n\r\nYour support truly makes a difference in the lives of these little learners.","fullyFundedDate":1764720450541,"projectUrl":"project/helping-all-students-thrive/9932688/","projectTitle":"Helping All Students Thrive!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Yamagiwa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8078488_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1765081337577","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-yamagiwa"},{"teacherId":1772575,"projectId":9448828,"letterContent":"Our class is loving the seat cushions that this project provided. When they are working independently or reading, they can make cozy little reading nooks all over the classroom instead of having to remain in their seats. They love the freedom to get comfortable and to learn in a way that is just a little different than usual. \r\n\r\nThis has been especially important for learners who need to move and change the scenery in order to remain focused on a task. Having comfortable alternatives to our desks and chairs has helped keep students engaged. They look forward to those times of the day when they can \"change their spot.\"\r\n\r\nIn addition, the mobile cart allows me to move around and be flexible with the students. It has become my mobile teacher's desk so I am not pinned down to one part of the room either.
