Students from across all classroom settings and grade levels in our school have benefitted from the new sensory and mindfulness resources available to them because of your donations. This project has allowed us to meet the variety of sensory needs of our diverse student population, from identifying upper grade students who were in need of the textured sensory strips on their desks to help with their fidgeting and sensory input to identifying lower grade students who benefitted from the chewy necklaces to reduce biting behaviors. These resources have specifically helped create safety in special education classrooms where we worked to create individualized behavior plans with teachers and paraprofessionals to address student needs and elicit prosocial behaviors through the development of individualized reward systems. These sensory resources and rewards have increased student instructional engagement and reduced behaviors such as elopement. General education teachers have also received sensory rewards from our office, thanks to this project, to help support children who may be experiencing crisis. \r\n\r\nAs students come into our office for special education testing, post crisis support, or counseling, they have been comforted with an array of juices and snacks available to them while they learn and talk through their emotional and academic needs. During counseling sessions and post crisis support, students enjoy using the lighted breathing pal koala and the calm anxiety mindfulness stickers to learn deep breathing strategies which they take back to their classroom and communities. The stickers are a visual reminder to them of the tools that they have learned and practiced in our office to help self regulate during times of stress. Even our fifth grade students enjoy coming by the school based support team office to say hello and seek sensory comfort through our weighted koala bear. Students have also received sensory support and comfort when using the light up musical Twinkle Little Star plush pillow on our big comfy bean bag chair. These resources have also been available to our families when they come in during a crisis, such as when in need of support to locate temporary shelter, or when they come in to discuss their children's special education needs with our team. We cannot thank you enough for your time and generosity in helping our community of students and families receive these supports. Our students are eager to learn and find support despite the challenges that they face. We send our deepest appreciation for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1756432635264,"projectUrl":"project/crisis-management-through-sensory-regula/9485288/","projectTitle":"Crisis Management Through Sensory Regulation","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gray","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9581455_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756396232446","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9581455"},{"teacherId":10075685,"projectId":9635220,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation. With your help, we were able to complete our social emotional library where students have been able to select reading on topics like neurodiversity, grief, and what it means to embrace ourselves including our differences from others. These topics are especially important in a community like ours where we serve the special education population in the school and the social emotional needs of any student in need of counseling or crisis support. \r\n\r\nDuring counseling or following a crisis, we have been able to select books on topics that help a child relate to how they may have been feeling during difficult moments. During one particular session, I was able to offer a child a choice of three different books to select from to help explain the way our bodies can signal feelings of overwhelm and anger. Through reading, we were able to identify the ways in which the child experienced these feelings during a recent peer conflict and alternative coping strategies that could be used when in a similar experience in the future. It has especially been important that our students see stories where the characters look and feel like they do. This culturally diverse set of literature gains the students trust and interest as we explore topics that are sensitive and not always talked about day to day. It's important that our students learn how our emotions signal bodily responses when feeling angry, sad, or overwhelmed by sensory input. We have also found that our students benefit from reading and talking about how unexpected changes in their lives can impact their feelings and behaviors. Combined with counseling, these resources have richened our toolbox for reaching our students needs by deepening their understanding of themselves and others in their community.","fullyFundedDate":1755697511824,"projectUrl":"project/affirming-young-minds-cultivating-a-ric/9564560/","projectTitle":"Affirming Young Minds: Cultivating a Rich Social Emotional Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gray","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9581455_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756396232446","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9581455"},{"teacherId":8152270,"projectId":9690727,"letterContent":"We appreciate all your contributions to making this project a success. I set up the fundraiser and involved my students in the process--I gave each class a weekly update on our fundraising goal, which was really fun and exciting for the kids. When we met our goal (thanks to you!) everyone was SO thrilled. \r\n\r\nWhen the ukuleles arrived, so many kids volunteered to help me unpack, break in strings, number the instruments, etc., and I was able to give out a lot of tasks. This helped the students understand that the ukuleles are all our responsibility to care for. So far, approximately 200 students have been using the ukuleles. 5th grade is 75% of the way to learning a full chord progression. Younger students are working on holding the instruments and strumming. Even some of my very youngest learners are able to use the ukulele to explore sound production. I am so proud of our students for showing their responsibility towards the instruments, trying something new, feeling safe enough to make mistakes. The best part is watching students discover they have a natural musical ability, that they couldn't have discovered without access to the instruments.\r\n\r\nOur hope for the future is for a ukulele ensemble perform for the spring music showcase.\r\nThank you again for your commitment to the arts, and giving students at PS 109 the opportunity to start their artistic journeys.","fullyFundedDate":1729564918449,"projectUrl":"project/ukuleles-for-a-very-cool-bronx-public-sc/8814393/","projectTitle":"Ukuleles for a Very Cool Bronx Public School!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wright","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8704561_orig.jpg?crop=1296,1296,x155,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727096029174","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8704561"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_327","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":432,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":21,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":75,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"8.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.7,"schoolId":327,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 109 Sedgwick on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 109 Sedgwick","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-109-sedgwick-school/327"}
