Our first few breakouts have all been centered around either a Fall or Halloween theme. Students love using the hidden clues to solve the riddles.\r\n\r\nAnd when they breakout, they get a real lockbox with a three-digit combination. Once again they need to solve a math riddle to get those three numbers. Every lockbox, when unlocked, has nestled inside it a reward such as a trophy or snack.\r\n\r\nBeside the praise and recognition they get for solving these challenges, they love being given something more tangible for a job well done. Handing them a trophy and/or a snack reward have helped me show my students how much I appreciate their collaboration and problem solving skills. Additionally, both are extremely motivational to fourth and fifth graders.\r\n\r\nMy students love being surprised and love showing off their rewards to peers and parents.
