As a result from this project being funded, students were able to create an art project that helped to connect them to their sense of place, as well as a create a visual of where they live in the Hawaiian Islands.\r\n\r\nStudents were able to use glue, paints, and recycled materials to create a 3-D model of Hawai'i Island. Students created these models independently by following teacher demonstration of each step. \r\n\r\nStudents did an amazing job with the access to the materials we needed to create these island models. We use our printer daily in order to create bright visual icons for our students with autism, to make fun activities and student work, and to make our classroom much brighter. The students love our jenga, connect four, and uno games and play it often, they also utilize our speech mirror sounds to assist them with their spelling skills and to support them with sounds that may be confusing for them.\r\n\r\nWe use supplies like our storage bins to organize the student supplies by subject, we have one section for math, one for reading, and one for hands on activities. The personal fans were a really huge help for our kids as we did not have AC in our classrooms, the students had difficulty focusing when they would come back from recesses because all they could think about was how hot it was. One of the play gyms we purchased has piano keys that are meant to be kicked with the feet to make music while the child is lying on their back on the mat. However, one of my students who is unable to sit or crawl, loves to gradually move her body so that her head is touching the 'piano keys' so that she can be close to the piano keys as they light up and she can listen to the music. This gym gives her motivation and incentive to move her body and increase her muscle capabilities. \r\n Another student who also is unable to sit up independently, enjoys reaching for the toys hanging from the bars over the play mat. Reaching for the toys causes her to stretch her arms and turn or twist her body, which increases her core strength and gives her more options for independently choosing what she wants to play with.\r\n I have one student who is constant motion all day long. The hammock has been a great solution for him to watch his iPad without running all over the room.
