A set of colored cylinders becomes a sorting challenge for a budding architect. Sandpaper letters encourage students to trace their letters over and over again. A puzzle is a problem that a child is determined to solve without an adult stepping in. These little moments may look simple, but they are the beginnings of independence, concentration, and confidence.\r\n\r\nYour support is helping us create more of those moments.\r\n\r\nWe are building our classroom around meaningful choices, with materials that children can select and work with independently. Our new materials give students opportunities to practice early literacy, mathematics, visual discrimination, fine-motor skills, and problem-solving through hands-on work. The sensory materials give children another way to explore and regulate while strengthening those same little hands that will eventually hold pencils, scissors, books, and tools.\r\n\r\nThe art supplies are especially exciting because they allow us to connect creativity with the stories and lessons happening in our classroom. Instead of every child being expected to produce an identical project, we can give them beautiful, open-ended materials and let them decide what they want to create. A piece of watercolor paper can become a painting, a picture of something they observed, or the setting for a story they have imagined.\r\n\r\nOne of our goals every year is to make \"choice time\" truly meaningful. We want children to walk to a shelf, look at the available work, make a decision, carry it carefully to a workspace, and become absorbed in what they are doing. We want them to experience that wonderful preschool moment when they struggle with something, keep trying, and suddenly realize, \"I did it!\"\r\n\r\nThe new materials are helping us realize that vision.\r\n\r\nAnd preschoolers are not shy about expressing their opinions about new classroom materials! New items immediately attract curious little hands. Children want to touch them, examine them, test them, and show their friends what they have discovered. That excitement is exactly what makes hands-on learning so powerful. When a child is genuinely interested in figuring something out, learning doesn't feel like an assignment—it feels like discovery.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in these children. Your generosity is helping us create a classroom filled with invitations to wonder: What is this? How does it work? Can I do it myself? What can I create?\r\n\r\nThose questions are where so much of early learning begins.","fullyFundedDate":1788539128407,"projectUrl":"project/preschool-where-learning-takes-root/10460547/","projectTitle":"Preschool: Where Learning Takes Root","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lisa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10489732"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_129146","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":100,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":83,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - Pre-K","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":42.9,"schoolId":129146,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Preschool on College Street on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Preschool on College Street","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/larue-co-school-district/preschool-on-college-street/129146"}
