When my classes read this play in the past, we only had access to a poorly made PDF document accessed through a Chromebook. This made it difficult to follow along for many students, and marking where different events occurred was difficult as well. To top it off, we live in a rural area where internet access is limited for some. If students needed to access the play at home, some were unable to do so. Each student having an actual physical copy of the book has made the logistics of studying its content easier. \r\n\r\nFew of my students have any knowledge about what jury duty involves, and the background knowledge that is built while reading this play is substantial. Not only do they learn about the role of jurors in criminal trials, but they also learn about the biases the fictional jurors have in the play. Most of my students have not considered common biases regarding socioeconomic status, neighborhoods of origin, or family structures. They also learn how personal experiences can create biases. \r\n\r\nAnother important thing my students learn about is reasonable doubt. This is a rather complex idea for students to fully grasp - what one person's reasonable doubt is does not necessarily match another person's. Throughout the play, we track each juror's doubts on a whiteboard, as well as the evidence, or lack of evidence, that gives rise to these doubts. Students also consider at which point they themselves would reach reasonable doubt based on the evidence presented in the play.\r\n\r\nReading this play will continue to build knowledge and understanding into my students for many years. Twelve Angry Men is a classic text, and I can't ever imagine not teaching this play.
