Balloons Over Broadway is the perfect way to introduce biography. As we read about Tony Sarg's life, students learn to sequence the important events in a person's life, find cause and effect, and pick out the problem and solution. Tony's challenge was making puppets big enough to be seen above the crowds, and his creative fix was the upside-down marionette balloons. We're also building vocabulary with words like marionette, puppeteer, and helium, and talking about the author's purpose for writing about a real person. It all connects to an event many of our students watch every Thanksgiving, which makes the learning feel real to them.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is shared and active. We begin with a whole-class read-aloud, stopping to ask questions, make predictions, and study the illustrations. Then students reread on their own or with a partner and respond in their reading journals. Because every student now has their own copy, no one has to wait or crowd around a shared book.
