Through these stories, students are introduced to important lessons about kindness, empathy, friendship, sharing, including others, and treating people with respect. We use the books to practice comprehension skills such as identifying characters, setting, problems and solutions, sequencing events, making predictions, and identifying the central message. Most importantly, the stories give my students a chance to connect what they are reading to their own lives and discuss how they can show kindness in our classroom and community.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is much more than simply reading words on a page. My students listen to stories read aloud, read independently and with partners, practice new vocabulary, and participate in conversations about what they are reading. We stop throughout stories to make predictions, ask questions, make connections, and discuss how the characters are feeling and responding to different situations. The new kindness books have become wonderful conversation starters and give my students a chance to practice reading while also thinking deeply about how they treat others. I love seeing students become excited to choose a book, find a comfortable spot, and get lost in a story.\r\n\r\nMy students who especially enjoy the new books are those who love stories about friendships and characters they can relate to. I have noticed that even students who may not always be excited about reading are drawn to these books because the topics feel relevant to their everyday lives. Some students particularly enjoy looking at the illustrations and making predictions about what will happen, while others love talking about the characters and sharing examples of times when they have experienced or shown kindness. These texts help my first graders give beginning readers the confidence to read with expression and grapple with self-control, problem-solving, persistence, and occasional meltdowns—very relatable for six-year-olds! In our classroom, reading is lively, interactive, and joyful. When we use the Pigeon books, students join in on repeated lines and \"read\" along, even if they aren't yet strong decoders, act out scenes using different voices for the Pigeon, the Bus Driver, or other characters, and participate in turn-and-talks to share predictions or describe how the Pigeon is feeling.\r\n\r\nMy reluctant readers are obsessed with them. The simple text and expressive illustrations give them access to \"big kid books\" they can read with confidence. My students with big personalities love the Pigeon's dramatic flair. They connect deeply with his over-the-top emotions and love reenacting his lines. Struggling writers are inspired by the simple sketch-style drawings. Many have started creating their own Pigeon-style comics during writing time. A couple of my quieter students have opened up during these read-alouds.
