Early literacy skills are so important to building a foundation of life-long reading. These scholastic news magazines provide an opportunity for my students to practice book handling independently, as they each receive one every two weeks! Together in class, we read through the scholastic news. We practice identifying the front cover, the title and letters. Inside, students are able to follow along as we read together. \r\nThe magazines are a great visual tool for my English language learners too. All the pictures provide another context clue to the meaning of new words. The language used is simple enough that students can begin to find sight words too. Sunglasses were a hit, and worn during our school picnic. \r\nWhen students are able to use the materials, and bring their own ideas into creation, it boosts their confidence. Watching them get excited over their own learning and hard work, is rewarding. Being able to send those items home to help build the school/home connection is valuable. Many students are transitioning from PreK to kindergarten, while other students prepare to return to PreK next year. Being able to send them off to summer break proud and excited about school is a goal accomplished!
