I was able to purchase a class carpet and a set of cushions for students to spread out around the room. We sit on the carpet for many things such as Morning Meeting where we strengthen social emotional skills and build a sense of community as a school family. Students participate in class instruction while sitting on the carpet throughout the day. While working in classroom centers, students love to pull out a cushion to spread out around the room. My students didn't just learn about animal defense mechanisms—they experienced them firsthand! Using the Roly-Poly Pill Bugs Kit, they became young scientists, designing and conducting experiments to understand how these tiny creatures respond to their environment. They tested how pill bugs react to light versus darkness, dry versus moist conditions, and different textures, carefully recording their observations and making inferences about how these behaviors help the bugs survive.\r\n\r\nThese hands-on experiments sparked deeper thinking and curiosity, which we carried over into creative writing. After studying real-life adaptations, my students applied what they learned to create their own Choose Your Own Adventure stories about animal defense mechanisms. As their stories unfolded, readers had to decide—should the animal hide, run, or use camouflage to escape a predator? Every choice led to a different outcome, reinforcing the idea that survival depends on adaptations.\r\n\r\nYour donation gave my students an opportunity to engage deeply with science and language, combining hands-on experiments with storytelling in a way that made learning truly unforgettable.
