Each deck of cards is paired with 1 of 28 different math games that utilize a standard deck. Many students enjoy the social interaction these games provide, while simultaneously reinforcing their math skills.\r\nIn two of the photos, a pair of students can be seen preparing to play Absolute Zero. While one student was shuffling the cards, the other was practicing math facts. All photos were taken during lunch--I am very proud that we have created a space where students want to come during lunch to do math.\r\nThe sets of flashcards allow students to practice math facts at their own pace or with a partner. Since this may not be an activity some students prefer to do at school, the flashcard sets can also be taken home for practice with a parent or other family member.\r\nWhen I was assembling the sets and students were first introduced to the materials, they expressed curiosity and excitement about how the cards would be used. Once I received the books, I shared with my colleagues in the math department as well as with the inclusion teachers. Two immediately requested different titles. \r\nWith both of those colleagues, I've already had opportunities to discuss and plan how to best create \"thinking classrooms.\" In fact, one of them is a teacher I co-teach with, so we've been able to see the impact firsthand. Through random pairing and small groups of two or three students, we've watched students engage in rich discussions about their thinking. We have seen students who don't normally participate take leadership roles, and students who rarely speak in whole group settings open up within smaller groups.\r\nSeeing this growth in just these two smaller groups motivates me to continue finding titles that apply not only to math but to instruction across the content areas. One of the most powerful moments was watching my students carefully create and interpret symbols, proudly explaining how their Egyptian cartouches represented and how it connected. Some students asked for additional bookmarks so they could make them for their family members and friends.
