Students use the boards during math to model fractions, create number lines, and explain their strategies visually. The vertical format has been especially powerful for group problem-solving; everyone can stand to help the brain power flow, see each other's work, and revise ideas in real time.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments so far was during a multi-step word-problem \"gallery walk.\" Each group solved a different problem on their vertical board, then rotated around the room analyzing classmates' strategies. I watched students debating and adjusting their work with so much confidence. Students who typically hesitate on paper were diving right in because it felt safe to erase, rethink, and try again.\r\n\r\nWhen our students saw the boards, their faces lit up instantly. Several students actually cheered when they realized these weren't just \"teacher boards\", they were theirs to write on. A few immediately asked, \"Can we try them right now?\" The excitement and sense of ownership were huge.\r\n\r\nWe're now moving into a unit that requires lots of modeling and revising, multiplying and dividing fractions, so these boards will help students work through misconceptions in a hands-on way. They'll also be using them to build and explain their reasoning during math discourse routines. Looking ahead, I plan to introduce \"vertical station rotations,\" where students cycle through tasks for math, science, and even social-emotional learning. These resources will continue to support deeper thinking, clearer communication, and more joyful learning throughout the year.","fullyFundedDate":1746786002071,"projectUrl":"project/stand-up-for-learning-vertical-workspac/9329313/","projectTitle":"Stand Up for Learning: Vertical Workspaces for Math Explorers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. M","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8706075_orig.jpg?crop=1080,1080,x0,y147&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734030278999","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8706075"},{"teacherId":9919024,"projectId":9104117,"letterContent":"Our students were super excited to see the arrival of our colorful and cozy rug, pillows, and clip boards. Several students pointed out that our rug had dots on it while others also notice how it looks like a Kandinsky painting. Before this project, we did not have enough headphones available, causing us to swap with another class, have to let students works without them, or use ones that were less than ideal. Many of our headphones were broken or uncomfortable, making it hard for students to focus during online projects, independent learning, and assessments. Now, students can engage more fully with our online platforms, listen to instructional videos clearly, and participate in individualized learning activities without distraction. In our inner-city school, where we serve multilingual learners, students with special needs, and refugee students, having reliable technology tools like these headphones is essential for providing equitable access to learnin, and all of our students should have access to them.\r\n\r\nThe students were incredibly excited when the new headphones arrived. They loved how comfortable they were and how much better they could hear — many said it was like \"an instant upgrade\" when using them. Our multilingual learners, in particular, have benefited from being able to clearly hear pronunciation during online lessons with language supports, while our special education students now have the consistent audio support they need to follow personalized instructional programs.\r\n\r\nWe appreciate your donations and look forward to using the headphones for all that we can now, and in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1735647133627,"projectUrl":"project/enhancing-learning-one-ear-at-a-time/8960800/","projectTitle":"Enhancing Learning, One Ear at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. M","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8706075_orig.jpg?crop=1080,1080,x0,y147&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734030278999","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8706075"},{"teacherId":61238,"projectId":8912236,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your kind and generous donation. Your thoughtful gift has truly made a significant impact on our students, and I cannot thank you enough for helping to bring our lessons to life in such a creative and engaging way.\r\nWe used the Model Magic dough to create maps of New York State, allowing our students to have a hands-on experience in learning about its geography. The dough made it so much easier for students to visualize and understand the state's rivers, mountains, and landmarks. The ability to color and shape the dough with markers and tools turned a typical lesson into an immersive experience. Our students were excited and motivated as they got to mold the landforms and physically interact with the material, enhancing their understanding and retention.\r\nAs an urban school, we often face challenges in making learning interactive and accessible. Your donation allowed us to make these difficult concepts come alive in a way that made the lesson more impactful and memorable. It's truly remarkable how a simple resource like Model Magic has the power to transform education, and I know the students learned so much more because of it.\r\nI am unbelievably thankful for your support, and on behalf of our entire class, I want to express how much this donation has meant to us. You've given our students the opportunity to learn in a way that was not only educational but also enjoyable. Your kindness is making a difference in their lives and their education, and we are incredibly appreciative.\r\nThank you once again for your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1733415073905,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-maps/8969985/","projectTitle":"Hands On Maps","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Chiappone","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9848797_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732744235788","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9848797"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_21000","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":364,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":35,"percentWhite":19,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":76.3,"schoolId":21000,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pine Hills Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pine Hills Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/albany-city-school-district/pine-hills-elementary-school/21000"}
