In kindergarten, hands-on learning is so important because students are still developing many of the skills they will use throughout their education. Having access to these materials allows me to provide different learning opportunities that meet the needs of all my students.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been watching my students get excited about learning and seeing how proud they are when they accomplish something new. We have been able to incorporate these resources into our daily classroom routines, small group activities, and independent learning time. By displaying the books with their covers facing out, students are discovering books that had been sitting on our shelves, often unnoticed, for years. I even had a student ask if we had gotten new Pokémon books because they had never noticed them before!\r\n\r\nOne of my fifth grade classes has become obsessed with the Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales graphic novel series, which had rarely, if ever, been checked out before. Now, students are learning about history while enjoying reading at the same time!\r\n\r\nThis project has not only helped increase graphic novel checkouts, but that interest has started to spill over into our regular fiction collection as well. Students are exploring more books, trying new genres, and finding books they might not have noticed otherwise.\r\n\r\nBecause of the success of this project, I plan to incorporate more forward-facing shelving throughout our fiction section. My kindergarten students use the chair pockets every single day to help keep our classroom organized and running smoothly. Before receiving them, supplies were often falling on the floor or getting mixed up, which took away valuable learning time. Now, each student has their own special place for folders, books, dry erase boards, and independent work materials. One specific moment that stood out was during our literacy centers. Students were able to quickly grab their reading tools and transition independently without needing extra teacher help. It has helped build responsibility and confidence in even my youngest learners.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the chair pockets, they were beyond excited. Many of them immediately wanted to organize their supplies and proudly showed their classmates \"their spot.\" They loved having something that felt personal and special just for them. I could tell right away that the chair pockets made them feel more prepared and important in our classroom community.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue using the chair pockets to support our growing independence during reading and math workshops. Students are beginning to work in small groups and complete more independent activities, so having organized materials easily accessible is making a huge difference.
