Thanks to your support, our special education classroom is overflowing with beautiful, impactful books – books that are already making a profound difference in the lives of my students. We are absolutely thrilled with the selection, and I wanted to share how these resources are blossoming into meaningful learning experiences.\r\n\r\nMany of you are fellow book lovers, and I know you understand the power a story holds. But as educators, we go beyond simply enjoying the narrative. These books aren't just read – they're experienced. Reading in our classroom looks a lot like interactive storytelling. We're not focusing on decoding skills as much as we are on unpacking emotions, exploring motivations, and practicing vital social-emotional learning (SEL) skills. These read-alouds are paired with activities like role-playing, drawing emotional responses, \"thinking maps\" to analyze character perspectives, and classroom discussions centered around \"what if\" scenarios.\r\n\r\nThe books you helped us acquire introduce and reinforce skills crucial for our students' development. We're specifically working on empathy - helping students understand and share the feelings of others. The stories model perspective-taking, encouraging them to step into another's shoes and consider situations from different viewpoints. We're also building coping strategies for difficult emotions, identifying healthy ways to manage frustration, sadness, and anxiety. And importantly, these books champion acceptance of diversity, celebrating differences and fostering a more inclusive classroom environment. We discuss how characters navigate challenges related to being different, and the students connect those stories to their own experiences and to the experiences of others in our school.\r\n\r\nThe impact is especially visible with students who are still developing these fundamental SEL skills. For some of my learners, understanding another person's feelings or seeing a situation from a different angle doesn't come naturally. They need explicit instruction and repeated opportunities for practice. Before these books, it was challenging to reach them – abstract concepts felt distant and overwhelming. Now, the stories provide a safe and accessible entry point.\r\n\r\nYour kindness has provided more than just books; you've given my students the tools to navigate the world with more empathy, understanding, and self-awareness. You've invested in their social-emotional growth, and for that, we are deeply, profoundly grateful. Thank you for believing in our students and for helping us create a more supportive and inclusive learning environment.","fullyFundedDate":1764799852975,"projectUrl":"project/read-through-someone-elses-eyes/9911023/","projectTitle":"Read Through Someone Else's Eyes","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Collins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8483626_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657623662144","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8483626"},{"teacherId":8483626,"projectId":9782018,"letterContent":"On behalf of my students and myself, thank you so much for your incredibly generous donation of high-interest books to our special education classroom! The arrival of these books has been truly transformative, igniting a love of reading in students who often struggle with decoding and comprehension. We've been absolutely thrilled with the selection, especially titles like Dog Man, Elephant & Piggie, and Bad Kitty—they've become instant favorites!\r\n\r\nIt's been wonderful to witness the excitement firsthand. I've had students giggling while reading independently, and they rush up to share their favorite parts with me during reading time. In a classroom where reading can sometimes feel like a challenge, seeing genuine enjoyment and engagement with books is incredibly rewarding. These books aren't just helping them practice reading skills; they're fostering a positive association with reading and building confidence.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has made a real difference in our classroom, and we are deeply grateful for your support of our students.
