The students were able to read as many books as they could and participate in discussions and Socratic Seminars about the topics and themes presented. They made connections to other books and even to today's world. The best part of the books you helped supply was that the students finished them. They wouldn't just start the books; they were finishing them before the deadlines for assignments and discussions. It was exciting to witness.\r\n\r\nWhen students were asked to compare the themes and ideas from the classroom novel that is part of the curriculum to the book they read for their independent reading, one student said, \"A theme in \"The Help\" is resistance to change as well as a theme in \"Things Fall Apart\". However, in \"Things Fall Apart\" the theme is presented by showing Okonkwo's downfall as a result of a resistance to change while \"The Help\" presents the theme by showing the backlash Skeeter receives from her friends because of her choice to write the book and their resistance to change to keep their power. This might reveal that Chinua Achebe views a resistance to change as tragic and he is more head-on with the issues he addressed as he puts it on the main character while Kathryn Stockett might view a resistance to change as a scapegoat for power but she may be more hesitant when addressing issues when it comes to a resistance to change because she puts in on side characters.\"\r\n\r\nWe had many discussions around the themes and ideas of the different books in Socratic Seminars and literature circles, so students could discuss the ideas that gave them multiple emotions they experienced from reading the books. The best part of this for me was when students asked if there were sequels to some of the books, or movies, and if there were any more recommendations for books from the authors of the books they were already reading. I truly appreciate your help in providing new worlds and new ideas to students who, in most cases, would wait for the movies. Students' participation in reading independently increased significantly this semester, and it is all thanks to you.","fullyFundedDate":1738546737327,"projectUrl":"project/baars-becoming-an-avid-reader/9087432/","projectTitle":"BAARs!
