Many of my students have not cooked in a kitchen, and because we are down to a single FACS (new name for Home Ec) teacher in a building of 750 students, quite a few students never get to take FACS. They almost always lose the opportunity when they take my Spanish class; it's how scheduling works in the building. So the opportunity to cook, in a school kitchen, with their friends, and as the first thing back from April Break for the push to the end of the year was nigh on magical. They were SO excited!\r\n\r\nOn the first day, we demonstrated how to dice a tomato and an onion, and we put out the supplies available. Then, we let them try their hand at salsa. Many of the students didn't recognize the spices, and their ways to determine what to use varied from \"I know these spices\" to \"well, let's taste them and see before we use them\" which precipitated some amazing facial expressions) to \"eh, why not?\"No tech. No looking up answers. Just problem solving and learning to work with others. It was glorious. And they had so much fun.\r\n\r\nThe second day we gave them tortillas, oil, pizza cutters, and sent them off to make their own tortilla chips. Thank you for the oil strainer spoons! It made it possible to work with the oil in a manageable and safe way! We tried before with tongs and spoons and learned the hard way just how messy and dangerous that can be with 13-year-olds. We did worry a little about the fire alarm because chips smoked at times, but thank goodness, no evacuations needed. They plated their food, cleaned up their kitchens, and enjoyed tasting their creations. \r\n\r\nI couldn't do this without Donors Choose. I don't have a budget for the tomatoes and tortillas; forget the oil, spices, and strainers I got through your generous donations! It was such an impressive, engaging way to kick off the last part pf the school year. And so memorable, my students will forever connect Cinco de Mayo to making chips and salsa. \r\n\r\nOne of the best parts was seeing students realize that they COULD do it. No one gave up, and some of them went on to make it at home. Middle school is about experimenting and exploring, and you let my students see more of the options out there. \r\n\r\nSince completing this project, we've took a field trip to a Mexican restaurant for lunch where the staff would only speak to my students in Spanish. If you want to eat, you better know how to ask for it. (And I saw them checking out the restaurant's chips and salsa, quietly comparing it to their own creations.) Now as we wrap up the year, students are creating their own restaurant skits, with at least one thing going wrong during the skit. Initially, I expected that to be a wrong drink order, salty food, or missing forks. Now, I know better to expect allergic reactions, dramatic relationship breakups, chefs coming out to challenge the customers, or sometimes, the wrong drink order. \r\n\r\nThank you again for giving me the resources I needed to make this happen for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1761051955866,"projectUrl":"project/cinco-de-mayo-chips-salsa-competition/9608675/","projectTitle":"Cinco de Mayo Chips & Salsa Competition","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Desaulniers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3236734_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1625778823677","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/desaulniers"},{"teacherId":5943955,"projectId":10092391,"letterContent":"My students and I have been putting the new resources to great use in our classroom each day. The electric pencil sharpener was definitely a classroom favorite! The table caddies and clipboard organizer have helped us stay much more organized, especially during group work and stations. Students are able to quickly access supplies, which allows us to maximize learning time. The paper organizer has also been extremely helpful for keeping assignments and class materials neat and easy to manage. Additionally, the Teachers Pay Teachers gift card has allowed me to purchase engaging math activities and resources that make lessons more interactive and meaningful for students.\r\n\r\nHaving organized materials and engaging resources allows students to stay focused, work together effectively, and build confidence in their learning. They're able to focus so much better, as they can individually listen to their own music. One moment that really stood out was when two students practiced together on the keyboards, as they were fully engaged, listening to each other, and having fun without as many equipment issues. My students immediately wanted to try out the headphones and noticed how much clearer everything sounded. They also mentioned that the headphones were more comfortable. The new chairs were a hit, as they are a good height, easy to move around, and stack.\r\n\r\nNow that we have reliable equipment, students can really dive into learning new keyboard pieces and practicing rhythms and melodies in pairs or small groups. Next, we're planning more partner and ensemble activities where students can collaborate, create their own digital music with the help of the headphones, and continue building their musical skills in a fun, supportive way.","fullyFundedDate":1745689612453,"projectUrl":"project/upgrade-our-keys-new-gear-for-piano-mag/9142958/","projectTitle":"Upgrade Our Keys: New Gear for Piano Magic!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. MacLeod","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8905776"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80267","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":557,"numTeachers":54,"percentFrplEligible":51,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":49,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":73.1,"schoolId":80267,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pennichuck Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pennichuck Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-42/pennichuck-middle-school/80267"}
