They saw our ever growing pile of new books building on my desk for a couple of weeks. Students have loved looking back at the stories as they become more and more familiar. We have been making \"waiting lists\" for friends that want to wait their turn to read a particular book. We have also started utilizing partner reading to ensure that everyone gets a chance to explore our new books!\r\n\r\nOur new books have spiced up our interest in reading this school year! As of today, our classroom has read 365 books together! We can't wait to continue exploring out new books! Many of the items are able to be played with both at the light table and in other areas of the classroom. The children have really enjoyed building structures at the light table and seeing how the colors change as the light on the table changes. Sometimes they prefer a solid color, while other times they prefer the table to change colors frequently. \r\nOne thing is for certain, these materials have made the light table an exciting place to explore. Children call us over to see their structures, patterns, and discoveries. They also have used the materials for counting, sorting and patterning. The magnet blocks allow the children to work with magnification and reflection. \r\nThese materials will be used for years to come. We have used the \"Crayola Colors of The World Kids'\" colored pencils, markers and crayons for our self-portraits and in everyday drawings. \r\nThis week, the children are learning how to use the Oil Pastels on the Velour paper. It is amazing to look at how the children have grown in their drawings from August until now. \r\nOnce these children have moved onto Kindergarten, we will have supplies to help future students also draw their self-portraits using crayons, markers, pastels and pencils that match their skin tone. Representation is important. This year the students have choices on the days they are in an independent group between journals, books and puzzles. The children overwhelmingly choose extra time in their journals on the days they are independent during small group times. \r\nThe binders have all held up well. They have enough room for us to add all of their self-portraits, work samples and book responses to their portfolios at the end of the year. Having the paper that is already hole punched has saved us time when we are preparing journals. This is the first year we have had reinforcement labels and it has helped us to keep all of the children's papers in their binders/portfolios. All of the colored pencils have been helpful for the children in their drawings and in the writing center. Having larger pencils are helpful, especially at the beginning of the year as the children are still working on our grasp pattern. While we will still need to get binders again for next year's students, many of the supplies you provided will still be available for our students to use next year. The children enjoy using the sand and while they're using it they are using their imagination, building their fine motor skills and social skills. \r\nToday as students were playing in the sand, I heard students conversing about building volcanoes, burying treasure and making things disappear. \r\nEach child was able to pick one castle to add some color to their sand. As you can see from the pictures, most of the students picked a color that made their sand very colorful, while others chose a castle that had a color very similar to the original sand. At the end of the school year, the children will take their leftover sand home to continue building their fine motor skills over the summer. Each friend signed up with their name on the waiting list. We planned to use a 10 minute timer to make sure all of our friends had a fair amount of time to play. \r\n\r\nThe new materials have opened up opportunities for new friendships to develop. Students who didn't typically work together have been working together in the dollhouse. We have overheard great conversations determining roles and furniture set up. \r\n\r\nWe can't wait to see how the use of our dollhouse materials changes and develops as the year progresses! After the first couple of shipments, they were eager to see what new puzzles would be joining our repertoire. We have been able to use our puzzles during small group work - allowing students to problem solve in their small groups. Once each group has had a turn with the puzzle, we then keep it available for use during our free choice time. \r\n\r\nOur students have been voting for which puzzles they want to use first. We record their votes on the board - then discuss which puzzle had the most/least votes and how we know. We can't wait to use some of our puzzles for our next IB units! We can use our seasons puzzles for each season and our bugs puzzle when we learn about living things. \r\n\r\nWe know that we are going to be able to use the puzzles all year long! They were so excited when they watched us take all of the plants out of their boxes. It was fun to make predictions about the types of plants we may get next! We were able to discuss the similarities and differences across the plants. \r\n\r\nThe students helped us pot our plants. They loved having a chance to get a little dirty in the potting soil. We talked about which pots would work best for each plant. As a class we decided on the best places in our classroom to put each plant. We've continued taking care of our plants.
