These new texts introduce students to characters, authors, cultures, languages, family structures, abilities, and life experiences that may reflect their own lives or help them understand the experiences of others. As we read, students practice identifying the main idea and supporting details, making inferences, summarizing, learning new vocabulary, comparing perspectives, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. Just as importantly, these books help us discuss identity, empathy, compassion, fairness, and respect.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom includes independent reading, interactive read-alouds, partner conversations, written responses, and whole-class discussions. Students make connections to the characters, share questions and observations, and recommend meaningful books to their classmates. I have especially enjoyed watching multilingual learners and students who were previously hesitant to select books become more engaged when they discover characters, families, and experiences they recognize. Other students are excited to learn about lives and traditions that are different from their own. These moments are helping students see reading as both a mirror that reflects who they are and a window into the world around them.\r\n\r\nThis project has made our classroom library more welcoming, relevant, and engaging for every reader. Because of these materials, I can provide students with more meaningful choices, connect literacy instruction to social-emotional learning, and lead conversations that strengthen both reading comprehension and our classroom community. Your generosity is helping my fourth graders become more confident readers, compassionate classmates, and thoughtful members of their community.","fullyFundedDate":1783540139456,"projectUrl":"project/diversity-library-books-for-fourth-grade/10368848/","projectTitle":"Diversity Library Books for Fourth Grade Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Cortes-Ramirez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10420416_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1779867548664","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10420416"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88572","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":610,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":90,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":76.2,"schoolId":88572,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Parkwood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Parkwood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/madera-unified-school-district/parkwood-elementary-school/88572"}
