Several of them immediately asked, \"Are those for us?\" and couldn't wait to try them out. One student who often struggles with classroom noise put on the headphones and whispered, \"It's so quiet!\" with the biggest smile on his face.\r\n\r\nWe are already putting these resources to use in meaningful ways. During independent reading, students wear the noise-cancelling headphones to block out distractions so they can focus on their books. In small group instruction, I've been able to use the listening devices to make sure my voice is clear and easy to follow, especially for students who have a harder time focusing in a busy classroom environment. The change has been remarkable—students are staying on task longer and showing more confidence in their reading responses.\r\n\r\nA specific project we're working on now is a listening and writing activity connected to our story-of-the-week in English Language Arts. Students listen to the story through the devices, then write about their favorite part. With the new headphones, they're able to focus on the details of the story and include more thoughtful responses in their writing.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generous support of the Bezos Family Foundation, my students are building stronger listening, comprehension, and writing skills. Our next steps include using these tools during upcoming research projects, where students will listen to short informational texts and then create their own fact-based writing pieces. The flu, stomach bug, strep throat, and other illnesses were going strong this year, and our class had very minimal absences thanks to the cleaning supplies! I had several volunteers that wanted to clean desks, wipe down common areas of the classroom, and especially spray the door knobs, light switches, and other areas as well. \r\n\r\nThe parents were extremely grateful as well. This is the first year that several of the students didn't get sick during this time of the year. They were thrilled that they didn't have to take off work, or make arrangements for their child when they fell ill. They were glad they could keep their things they use every day nearby. Previously, these items were stored away from them. This simple organizing tool is such a blessing.
