Students seem even more excited to read for their independent reading time. In my classroom, we read for ten minutes at the start of every class period. It's a time that I recall having when I was in middle school - DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) - a time of the day that I most looked forward to, and a time that I hope students in my classroom look forward to, too. The screen time and brain rot epidemic that we are seeing in young people across the country (and the world?) today can be combatted by some good, old-fashioned entertainment like reading a good book. All it takes is one good book to get kids to see that reading is actually pretty great! Although we didn't get to the Bulletin Boards, we will finish them on our Makeup day.\r\n\r\nWe really hope that everyone supports our project next year, so that we can paint even more benches in our school colors. The students have already used most of the materials, for some it was their first time dissecting. \r\n We first started out with the sheep brains wrapped in dura matter which most of the students found very interesting. They found the toughness of the dura to be very unique and that this form of protection surrounds each of our brains. \r\nWe then dissected the sheep eyes and again for some students it was their first time dissecting eyes. They also found the inside of the eye especially the tapetum lucidum interesting and unique. We were thrilled to complete our first dissection right before winter break, where the class dissected and labeled a Sheep brain as a culmination project for our Nervous system chapter.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the sheep brain, we are so lucky to be able to dissect a cow's eye for our special senses chapter. Once we get to the Cardiovascular chapter, we will dissect the heart. Lastly, as the summative assessment for the course, students will dissect a fetal pig. By cooking eggs in each type of pan, students were able to directly observe differences in heat transmission, heat retention, and surface interaction. Cast iron pans demonstrated slower heat-up times but superior heat retention and more even distribution once fully heated, while nonstick pans heated more quickly but lost heat faster. These observations led to meaningful discussions about conductors of heat, thermal mass, and how different materials affect cooking outcomes at the molecular level.\r\n\r\nBecause our kitchen uses electric ranges, students also learned how heat transfer differs compared to gas ranges. We discussed how electric burners rely on consistent contact and radiant heat, making pan material especially important for even cooking. Students analyzed how cast iron's ability to retain heat can compensate for the cycling on and off of electric elements, while lighter nonstick pans respond more immediately to temperature changes.
