It was great to see the student's excitement and interest as they were exploring the graphing calculator. We were able to apply in real life scenarios and the students were able to make connections with quadratic function and data.\r\n\r\nThe students were thankful that there were class set of graphing calculators in case if they forgot or lost them. My own home, which is a few blocks from school, remains uninhabitable because of toxins. I lost almost everything -- except for hope. I was sitting in a hotel room watching the news, and on live TV I saw the school's journalism lab engulfed in flames. That's when I started a list of items I'd have to replace. Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me regain my footing.\r\n\r\nI went to the Pali High temporary campus today to begin preparing for the spring semester, which gets under way next week. When I walked into my room, I saw a stack of boxes. I took inventory -- the refrigerator, tea kettle, bulletin board materials, and storage cubes -- have arrived. I still haven't seen my new classroom -- Pali High is moving on Jan. 26 -- but in my mind's eye I can finally my room come together. After months of working in a windowless, concrete box in a converted department store, my students and I are looking forward to returning home. \r\n\r\nIn a word, this is wonderful, just wonderful. \r\n\r\nIn offering a $2,000 grant to every teacher affected by the fire, the Wonderful Company did more than help me fill an empty space. The generous gift filled my heart with optimism when I needed it most. You see, yesterday was the anniversary of the wildfire. My own home remains uninhabitable. My community still looks like a war zone. And it's eerily quiet day and night in the Palisades. But in a few weeks, my new classroom will be filled with love and laughter. And snacks. Lots of snacks.\r\n\r\nIsn't that just wonderful?\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping me navigate this incredibly challenging journey -- and for modeling for my students what community engagement, kindness and empathy look like. For me and my students, U102 at Palisades Charter High School was more than a classroom. It was our news room -- and our home away from home. I'd spent more than 40 years assembling an array of supplies students use to produce the Tideline, Pali High's student-run newspaper. As the advisor, it was my job to find a way to supply my students with the tools of the trade -- computers, design tablets, cameras, and reference books. In a matter of minutes, my work was reduced to ashes.\r\n\r\nOnce I had time to fully comprehend the scope of the damage done by the Palisades Wildfire, I sent an email to my students. My message: While it's heartbreaking to lose U102, we cannot lose sight of the fact that we'll create magic wherever we go.\r\n, \r\nThanks to you, we're back in business. The camera kit, color printer, and supplies provided through this project will enable students to keep producing content for the Tideline. Our job is to tell the stories of a community working to recover from a devastating wildfire that destroyed 40 percent our our campus and much of the surrounding community, including the homes of one-quarter of my staff members. Our efforts been chronicled on ABC, NBC, CBS, and Spectrum News as well as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. You gave us the supplies to turn what was a lofty idea into a hands-on engineering lab. With a steady influx of marbles, pulleys, popsicle sticks, books, race cars and recycled materials, we've moved past the \"limited resources\" phase where we had to compromise on our designs. Instead of just drawing diagrams on paper, we had the physical components needed to test complex energy transfers and chain reactions in real-time. This abundance allowed us to embrace the \"trial and error\" spirit of Rube Goldberg himself, giving us the freedom to fail, iterate, and ultimately succeed in building more ambitious and creative contraptions.\r\n\r\nBeyond the technical builds, your generosity has sparked a noticeable shift in the classroom's energy and collaborative spirit. Having a variety of unique parts—from screws and levers to dominoes and ramps—encouraged us to think outside the box and solve problems collectively. It has leveled the playing field, ensuring that every student has access to the high-quality tools necessary to see their vision come to life.
