Since everything started on January 6, I have felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness, shortly after I learned that Palisades was burning and our school was in the fire's direct path. The images were heartbreaking, and every second mattered, especially since many of my colleagues, friends, and students live in the Palisades. \r\n\r\nUnfortunately, no one could have imagined the worst outcomes, not even in our most vivid nightmares. But reality set in when we discovered that our campus was heavily impacted, the city was destroyed, and there was uncertainty about returning to Pali. Like in many fairy tales, we hoped for the best ending; we truly believed in that hope! \r\n\r\nTherefore, your donations arrived at the perfect time. As kids walk into my classroom, their faces light up with excitement. They repeatedly mention how colorful and lively the classroom looks. Beyond that, they are getting the materials they need to complete their assignments. Today, students came to class ready to complete a project: flashcards for Spanish conjugation. From scissors and construction paper to markers and beyond, it had everything the kids needed to complete this task. It is crucial at this time to have these items available, as some come with no resources and often become a heavy burden. Thank you for easing this transition for them.","fullyFundedDate":1770001836211,"projectUrl":"project/rebuilding-with-every-step-we-take/10074555/","projectTitle":"Rebuilding With Every Step We Take","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Aurora D.L Martinez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10411296_orig.jpg?crop=1946,1946,x0,y363&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1769663141228","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10411296"},{"teacherId":7366219,"projectId":10062005,"letterContent":"When James walked into the room on Monday, he exclaimed, \"This feels like home.\" That enthusiastic endorsement underscores the value of the contribution you made to my Donors Choose project titled \"Back to PCHS.\" For students like James, staff, and faculty, it's been an incredible journey. A little more than a year ago, the Palisades Wildfire destroyed my classroom, about one-third of the Palisades Charter High School campus, and much of the surrounding community. We spent two weeks in online school before finally settling into the abandoned Sears department store in nearby Santa Monica. That building didn't have classroom doors, and my room had a storm drain and no windows. Still, we found a way to make it work.\r\n\r\nHaving more than 2,500 people return to the Palisades Charter High School campus on Jan. 27 marks an important step forward for the entire community. Parents, former students, and community members lined the street leading to campus to welcome us back, and your kind donation allowed me to set up a working classroom. The cleaning supplies, storage bins, and healthy snacks are greatly appreciated.\r\n\r\nOnce again, my room has become a home-away-from home for my students, many of whom spend more than three hours commuting to and from campus every day to get to campus. James stayed after class to help me set up the snack bin, Bailey volunteered to help me hang posters in the room, and at least a half-dozen students drop by to borrow a computer adaptor. \r\n\r\nThank you for helping me create an engaging learning center for my students who have endured so much in such a short time. Students who didn't have the motivation to get work done at Sears are now engaged. When I arrived on my first day, the classroom was completely empty—everything had been thrown away due to the fires. Over the past 20 years, I had personally purchased many materials for my classroom and my students, and I had also collected meaningful gifts from former students that carried deep sentimental value and can never be replaced. All of it was gone. Because of you, my students now have books in Spanish, furniture, posters, and decorative materials that they use every day in a space that feels welcoming, organized, and inspiring. One unforgettable moment was when the students first walked in and saw the materials—thetheir excitement, smiles, and curiosity were immediate. They eagerly explored the books, read the Spanish posters, and took pride in learning in a classroom that had been rebuilt with care and love.\r\n\r\nThis project has had a powerful impact on my students' learning.
