Your generosity has given my English Language Learners access to books that are not only fun and engaging, but also provide important opportunities to build literacy skills.\r\n\r\nThe new books are helping students practice a variety of important reading skills, including vocabulary development, making connections, identifying characters and setting, sequencing events, identifying the main idea and details, making predictions, and retelling stories. For my English Language Learners, these books are especially valuable because they provide meaningful opportunities to learn new words and practice using language in context. The culturally relevant books also allow us to discuss identity, community, traditions, and the importance of respecting and learning about different cultures.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, social, and student-centered. Students choose books that interest them and spend time looking through pictures, reading independently, listening to stories, and sharing books with classmates. We use books as a starting point for conversations, vocabulary practice, writing activities, and connections to students' own lives. I want my students to see reading as something they get to do rather than something they have to do. Having a classroom library filled with books they are excited to pick up has helped make that goal possible.\r\n\r\nMy younger students have been especially excited to explore the picture books and books with colorful illustrations. My Navajo students have also shown a special interest in books that reflect their culture and experiences. Seeing students recognize familiar traditions, communities, and perspectives in the books they read is incredibly meaningful. These books help send the message that their culture belongs in our classroom and that their stories are important.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, reading in English can feel challenging. These new books give them opportunities to experience success, build confidence, and discover the joy of reading. Thank you for giving my students books they are excited to read and a classroom library where they can see themselves, their culture, and their interests represented.
